Situated in the southern reaches of Africa, Botswana is renowned for its pristine wilderness areas characterised by deep lagoons, wetlands, lush palms, rugged hills, and desert plains scattered with scrubland. The country’s primary tourist draw card is undoubtedly the vast red expanse of the Kalahari desert and its remarkably beautiful Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. These natural wonders provide a tranquil haven for an abundance of African wildlife to thrive. Other highlights include the impressive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, where visitors are privy to massive zebra migrations during the flood season; the Savuti plains, which host large prides of lions; and the Tsodilo Hills, where 4500 rock paintings form a unique record of human settlement over many millennia.
With almost one third of its land set aside for conservation, a low-density tourism policy that leaves it blissfully crowd-free and the largest free-roaming elephant population on the planet, Botswana is touted as the ultimate safari destination by those in the know. The pace of safari is gentler, with time spent slowing down and enjoying the smaller details. Wildlife sightings may not be as frequent but they are more exclusive, most often only shared with those on your safari vehicle.
Maun is Botswana’s tourism capital and the gateway to the world renowned Okavango Delta, and the northern game parks of the country such as Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. Maun is equipped to cater for all the needs of the safari industry today. Today Maun is a thriving town of shopping centres, banks, office blocks, hotels, lodges, guest houses and campsites.
Situated in the north-western corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site as it is the largest inland delta in the world. The magnificent Okavango River sprawls out over the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert forming this flourishing waterlogged oasis featuring countless meandering waterways and crystal clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife. The Okavango Delta stretches over 15000 square kilometres. Visitors can enjoy a number of wonderful activities such as game viewing, fishing, bird watching or taking an authentic guided Mokoro excursion through this wetland paradise in a traditional dugout canoe. Commonly spotted animals include: lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and countless species of bird.
Situated in the east of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve ranks as one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa. It covers more than 4871 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, and the varied terrain includes savannah, winding waterways, and dense forest. This diverse ecosystem supports an incredibly wide spectrum of wildlife, ranging from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, to the rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope, lion, cheetah and packs of wild dog in the open grasslands. The birdlife is prolific and includes most of the 550 bird species recorded on Botswana’s national bird list.
Moremi lies on the Eastern Extremity of the Okavango Delta, Habitats range from wide open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast stands of reeds, mixed woodland and open grassland. As a result of the extremely variable habitat the diversity of both wildlife and birdlife is excellent. Moremi is amongst the best game reserves in Africa for viewing the endangered African wild dog. It is home to the resident herd of several buffalo whose range covers the territories of many prides of lion which may be seen flanking the ever moving herds. Breeding herds of elephant move between their browsing areas and the Mopane Forests and the fresh water of the Okavango.
The Khwai area of the Okavango lies along the northern boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced boundary allowing wildlife to move freely between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The Khwai area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve with the added advantage of being a private concession which means the ability to do walking safaris and night drives.
Savuti, also known as Savute lies in the heart of Botswana’s beautiful Chobe National Park. This dynamic wilderness is a sweeping expanse of savannah brooded over by several rocky outcrops which guard a relic marsh and the dry channel that was once its lifeline. The Savute goes through wet and dry cycles, where wild dogs hunt in the dry river channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. Visitors to this spectacular area can spot abundant wildlife including: a variety of birds, elephants, antelope, lion prides, black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, kudu, hyena, cheetah Cape buffalo herds, and thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest.
In the heart of Botswana’s Chobe National Park lies a dynamic wilderness, a sweeping expanse of savannah brooded over by several rocky outcrops which guard a relic marsh and the dry channel that was once its lifeline. This is Savute, where mysterious wet and dry cycles mould the landscape and dictate the nature of its wild inhabitants. For 28 years between the years 1982 and 2010, the channel was dry, and wild dogs hunted in this channel where crocodiles used to swim. Between 2010 and now, the channel has started flowing again and giving birth to yet another rich aquatic life with a variety of species of birds, hippos, crocodiles, frogs and aquatic plant species.
Contrary to the vast majority of the country, Savuti is not a flat region. Great outcrops of volcanic rocks, outside the Kalahari sands, dominate this bush. These rocks provide a habitat of a collection of species that is totally different to the rest of the wildlife areas: small fauna, birds and plants. The Savuti Marsh has been the subject of a number of award winning documentaries on African wildlife. This vast piece of land has over the years been home to great prides of lions and cackles of hyenas.
Your day normally starts with coffee, tea, and biscuits before the morning activity, returning to the camp late morning when brunch will be waiting. Buffet brunches are typical with a warm dish such as stew served with salads, quiches and cold meats. Cereals, fruit, bacon, eggs, sausage, and toast are also usually on offer. Cake and tea is served before the afternoon activity. Dinner consists of an appetizer followed by meat, fish and pasta dishes served with assorted vegetables and sauces. This is followed by coffee and tea, cheeses and sinful desserts!
