Program

Day 1: Arrival

Your Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate guide will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and escort you to tonight’s accommodations in Moshi / Arusha. As local Tanzanians, the guides know the country with unrivaled familiarity, so you’ll be in good hands from the moment you land to the moment you leave. You can also arrive a day earlier as the accommodation is included at no extra cost. Overnight at Panama Garden Resort (Moshi), Park View Inn (Moshi), or Tulia Boutique and Spa (Arusha).

Day 2

In the morning, you will depart from Moshi or Arusha with picnic lunch boxes and proceed to Tarangire National Park. This park has the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem with a smorgasbord of predators and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelopes such as the stately fringed eared oryxes and peculiar long-necked gerenuks are regularly observed.

You will drive in the park to explore some of the 300 elephants that scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, gazelles, hartebeests, and land crowd the shrinking lagoons. The afternoon break will be spent to enjoy the picnic lunch. Then, you will continue with a game drive.

In the late evening, you will leave Tarangire National Park and drive to the lodge at Marera Valley, Baghayo Garden, or Bougainvillea Safari Lodge for your dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3

In the morning after breakfast, you will descend 610 meters / 2000 feet down to the Ngorongoro Crater floor, with picnic lunches, and spend the day enjoying a game viewing. This collapsed volcano is home to a large concentration of wildlife including lions, rhinos, hippos, hyenas, and elephants. In the afternoon, you will take a short break to enjoy your picnic lunch at the picnic site. In the late afternoon, you will ascend the walls of the crater and climb up to the rim before returning to your lodge for your dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4

After breakfast, you will leave the lodge and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The park supports a variety of habitats and a diversity of wildlife. You will visit the natural hot springs and try to observe the tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara National Park. In the late afternoon, you will leave the park and drive back to Arusha or Moshi to your hotel.

Day 5

You will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to catch your flight back home.

Location

This safari will take you to explore Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara National Park.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas. It features some of the greatest concentrations of game in Tanzania (second to Ngorongoro Crater) but with less crowded and unspoiled wild beauty. The size of this national park makes it perfect for a one-day game drive. It is also famous for its unique tree-climbing lions.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater features one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa. There, you will witness an amazing spectacle of African wildlife inside a self-contained world featuring an unbelievable concentration of animals.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most dramatically located wildlife areas. It consists of a shallow but huge soda lake at the foot of the Great Rift Valley's western escarpment.

Food

There are plenty of culinary adventures to be found on your safari trail as well! They offer vegan, vegetarian, regular, and gluten-free food as well. For other dietary requirements, simply tell them in advance. They are happy to work out something and happy to keep your tummy happy. Africa has an incredibly rich and diverse food culture.

Eating on safari: What to expect

You can absolutely expect to find familiar, globally popular foods on your African safari. Safari lodges are used to cater to people from all over the world, and they know what people like to eat.

Breakfast

Start your day well with omelets, cereals, toast, fruits, salads, or continental breakfast.

Lunch

You are most likely going to be enjoying your lunch in the middle of your game drive, in some stunning natural location. This will usually be served picnic-style, and Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate takes these meals very seriously.

Dinner

At dinnertime, you will typically be treated to a full three-course meal, taking advantage of local produce and the culinary talents of the lodge chefs. These menus will usually have a choice of 3 different starters, 3 different mains, and a selection of desserts. Usually, the menu will feature at least 1 meat-based and at least 1 vegetarian option.

Nothing that catches your fancy? Don’t be shy to talk to your waiter - in most cases, the kitchen will be more than happy to create a dish to your liking.

Drinks

Quench your thirst throughout the day with water, coffee, tea, wine, or beer. Filtered water will always be readily available when you travel with Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate. At your lodges, there will be drinks available as well, from sodas, to wine, to cocktails.

Some lodges will offer buffet-style dining, with plenty of snacks and other tasty treats available all day, while others will offer restaurant-style dining with set menus.

In more remote areas, you can expect simpler menus, but this doesn’t mean the chefs will put any less love in what they serve! You can definitely find familiar foods, but you can also enhance your African experience by venturing into the local cuisine.

Special dietary requirements

The most important thing to making sure your special dietary requirements are met is: communication. Make sure to let Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate know about any dietary requirements in advance, before your trip. With a little extra preparation, they will make sure that your needs are met at every stage of your trip. They will also be able to check with lodges to make sure they can provide the meals you need.

East Africa is very accustomed to plant-based diets. Many of the local meals are purely plant-based anyway.
