Location

This safari will take place in Tsavo East and Amboseli, Kenya.

This four-day road safari will take you from Mombasa to Tsavo East National Park, Tsavo West National Park, and Amboseli National Park.

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is part of the Greater Tsavo National Park that includes Tsavo East and West national parks and the Chyulu Hills and consists mostly of miles and miles of dry flat thorn-bush, semi-arid acacia scrub and narrow woodland dominated by acacia. Wonderful Baobab trees are also a common sight in the park. Tsavo East is located about 200 kilometers south-east of Nairobi, on the main Nairobi to Mombasa road.

Tsavo East has a wide diversity of habitats ranging from bushy grasslands, open plains, rocky outcrops, semi-arid acacia scrub, and woodlands. Swampy marshlands occur near Voi River. This has made it possible to host a wide variety of wildlife. Though big in size, some parts of Tsavo East are not open to tourist over the years but today, restricted access is allowed. North of Galana is a true wilderness.

Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Tsavo East National Park including the ostrich, and migratory birds like kestrels and buzzards. Tsavo East is home to all of the Big Five including large amounts of "red" elephants, black rhinoceros, buffalos, and lions. plains game include giraffes, antelopes, zebras, buffalos, waterbucks, etc.

Tsavo East's main attractions include:

  • Yatta Plateau - one the world's largest and longest lava flow (300 kilometers long).
  • Lugards Falls and the Galana River - easy access to the rapids and possibility to spot majestic landscapes along the river.
  • Mudanda Rock is an outcrop rock of 1.6 kilometers long with a large dam at its base. There is a possibility to walk at the top of the rock, enjoy the cool breeze, and watch wildlife drinking in the dam.
  • Aruba Dam - built in 1952 across the Voi River, this dam attracts many bird species and migratory species.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located 240 kilometers south-east of Nairobi near the border with Tanzania on the northwestern foot of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. This park is best known for the excellent views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National Park embodies five main wildlife habitats, open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps, and marshland.

Amboseli is a place of stark contrast. Meaning "salty dust" in Maa, the language of the Maasai. Amboseli, despite its sometimes dry and dusty appearance, has an endless water supply filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro's ice cap. Amboseli National Park covers 392 square kilometers and lies at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s’ highest mountain.

Amboseli National Park has over 50 species of large mammals including leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffalos, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, plains game, crocodiles, mongooses, hyraxes, dik-diks, lesser kudus, and nocturnal porcupines. Most of all, Amboseli National Park is famous for its huge herds of elephant which roam the park freely. With its awesome view of Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest mountain at 5,895 meters), Amboseli National Park offers a unique and breathtaking backdrop for viewing Africa's animals.

One of the major attractions in Amboseli National Park is the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, then there is the Observation Hill which allows an overall view of the whole park especially the swamps and elephants, the swamp below observation hill hosts many elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and a variety of water fowls like pelican, Egyptian goose. Amboseli is home to the Maasai people so a village tour will open you up to contemporary Maasai culture and indigenous lifestyle.
