About the safari

Big five animals (elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and lion) are examples of charismatic megafauna, featuring prominently in popular culture, and are among the most famous of Africa's large animals. The term was coined by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot.

Location

The safari will take place in Namibia and Botswana.

Namibia

Located in southwestern Africa, Namibia boasts a well-developed infrastructure, some of the best tourist facilities in Africa, and an impressive list of breathtaking natural wonders. Visitors can explore the capital of Windhoek and discover the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund boasting remnants of the country’s German influence, reflected in the architecture, culture, cuisine, and the annual Oktoberfest celebrations. To properly appreciate this extraordinary country, you will have to venture out of the cities to explore the remarkable natural landscapes Namibia has to offer.

These include: the impressive Fish River Canyon; the vast Etosha National Park teeming with abundant wildlife, such as lions, desert-adapted elephants, and the Hartmann's mountain zebra; the hauntingly beautiful Kalahari Desert; and of course the Namib Desert stretching for over 2000 kilometers along the magnificent Atlantic Coast. Namibia is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable African experience in a uniquely beautiful untamed wilderness.

Erindi Game Reserve

Located southeast of Omaruru, the Erindi Game Reserve is a spectacularly scenic protected reserve in north-western Namibia. ‘Erindi’, meaning the place of water boasts incredible lush scenery. Stretching over 79000 hectares, this natural wonderland features comfortable accommodation options and magnificent landscapes encompassing grasslands, savannahs, and rugged mountains inhabited by an abundance of diverse wildlife.

This idyllic retreat is also known for its ecotourism, rich cultural heritage, and community involvement. Visitors can look forward to cultural village tours, San rock art, guided bush walks, and thrilling game drives to view elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lions, hyenas, zebras, kudu, wildebeests, and many other animals. Do not miss the opportunity to jump on a night drive to catch a glimpse of the nocturnal species that thrive in the dark wilderness.

Damaraland

It is a rocky site situated in the Kunene Region of north-western Namibia. The site contains around 2,000 rock carvings and in 2007, UNESCO approved it as a World Heritage Site.

Twyfelfontein

Set in the Kunene Region of northwestern Namibia, Twyfelfontein is a spectacularly scenic area, featuring one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. The name ‘Twyfelfontein’ translates to ‘Fountain of Doubt’, which refers to the perennial spring situated in the impressive Huab Valley flanked by the slopes of a sandstone table mountain.

It was this spring that attracted Stone Age hunters over 6000 years ago, and it was during this time that the extensive group of rock engravings and paintings were produced. Visitors can look forward to basing themselves at some wonderfully shady campsites along the Aba-Huab riverbed while exploring over thirty different sacred ritual sites of the traditional hunter-gatherer communities.

Etosha National Park

The park’s main characteristic is a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. Yet there is abundant wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving you almost guaranteed game sightings. At the same time, Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and Southern Africa, the concentration of big games around the waterholes makes game viewing incredibly rewarding.

Etosha South

Located just south of the boundary of Etosha National Park in northwestern Namibia, Etosha South makes up the southern region of this wild paradise. The area is comprised of a collection of world-class private game reserves. The national park can be accessed via the southern entrance at Andersson’s Gate. Visitors can catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife including lions, giraffes, elephants, white and black rhinos, and a multitude of plains game. Popular activities include: enjoying an open 4x4 safari with an expert guide, half-day or full-day drives with the option of a picnic lunch with wine on the full-day game drive.

Grootfontein

Situated 450 kilometers from Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, within the Otjozondjupa Province of Namibia, Grootfontein (meaning ‘Big Fountain’) is famous for being home to the largest meteorite ever discovered on Earth (located roughly 25 kilometers from the town center). Hoba is believed to have occurred around 80,000 years ago, and its enormity is a true sight to behold.

The town is also unique in that it is extremely lush and fertile during the summer months. Purple Jacaranda trees create a riot of color around the town. Other must-see attractions include the fascinating Grootfontein Museum, and the Abenab and Berg Aukas Mines. From here, a fantastic network of hiking and biking trails leads into the wild.

Divundu

Set roughly 200 kilometers east of Rundu on the southeastern banks of the great Okavango River, the small village of Divundu is a wonderful destination from which to explore the river, game parks, and national reserves of the area. Visitors can enjoy bird-watching boat safaris or visit the Mahango Game Park, which is home to herds of elephants as well as hippos, buffalos, giraffes, antelope, and many other animals. The spectacular Popa Falls, a dramatic series of cascades - are a popular must-see attraction. Divundu is also the perfect base for adventures in Botswana and the Okavango Delta.

Chobe River Front

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park which is renowned for its diverse and abundant game viewing opportunities. This section of the park is best known for its dense concentration of wildlife, including elephant and hippo populations, but the waters attract all manner of game including large herds of buffalo and the lions that prey on them - a visit to the Chobe River Front guarantees close encounters with an array of African wildlife.

Visitors can look forward to a range of exciting activities such as 4WD along the banks; motorboat cruises; and rare birdlife spotting. For a unique, luxury safari experience, hire a houseboat.
