Udawalawe National Park lies on the border of Sabaragamuwa Province and Uva Provinces, Sri Lanka. The park was established to provide sanctuary for wild animals that were displaced by construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir at the Walawe River. It also protects the reservoir's catchment. It covers a total of 30,821 hectares (119.00 sg miles) and was established 30 June 1972.
The area was previously used for shifting cultivation (chena agriculture) before the park was established. After the declaration of the national park, farmers were gradually removed. It is located 165 km (103 mi) away from Colombo. Udawalawe is a vital habitat for waterbirds and Sri Lankan Elephants. It is a popular tourist spot and is the third most visited park in the country.
Udawalawe National Park is located in the country's dry and wet zones. This means that it is relatively dry, even outside of the rainy season of March to May and October to January.
The Ratnapura District is the left bank of UdaWalawe Reservoir. The Monaragala District's eastern sector is on the right bank. The UdaWalawe-Thamalvila road defines the southern boundary. The Sevanagala Sugar Plantation is located to the south of this road. UdaWalawe's main attraction is the elephants. There are 600 of them in the park, in herds up to 50. The perimeter of most of the park is enclosed by an elephant-proof fence. This prevents elephants from wandering into areas where there is more human population or cattle. Unfenced borders are where elephants can migrate in and out of the park. You can best observe herds between 6.30am and 10am, and again between 4pm and 6.30pm.
