Bundu Adventures will organize for you a safari through Zambia and show you stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, as well as beautiful rivers. This safari offers a great African adventure and camping experience in Kafue National Park, one of the most beautiful spots that Zambia has to offer. Join this safari and expect to see lions, antelopes, elephants, wild dogs, cheetahs, as well as the elusive leopards among the inhabitants of the area!
This safari includes 5 nights' accommodation in a tent with all camping equipment (except sleeping bag and pillow). On day 1, the camping will be at the Hippo Bay Campsite at Lake Ithezi-Thezi. On day 2 and 3, the camping will be at Kasabushi Campsite next to the Kafue River. Moreover, on day 4 and 5, the camping will be on the banks of Kafue River at Mayukuyuku Campsite.
Bundu Adventures' tents are large dome type tents (3,5 x 2,5 meters square and two meters high) and a maximum of two guests are accommodated in each. The tents are spacious and provide ample room for camping beds and luggage. The camping beds (2 meters long, 60 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters high) are fitted with 50 millimeters high-density foam mattresses. Mattresses are covered with linen.
You will be picked up from your accommodation in Livingstone in the early morning and drive to Kafue National Park - one of the world’s largest national parks with some 22,400-kilometer square. You will enter at the southern gate and drive via Nanzhila Plains up to Lake Ithezi Thezi where you will explore the area on a game drive. Camping will be at Hippo Bay Campsite at Lake Ithezi-Thezi (lunch and dinner).
After a morning drive along the lake shore, you will head north to the central area of the Kafue National Park on the ‘Spinal Road’ to your next campsite at Kasabushi Lodge. You will do game drives in this area. The camping will be next to the Kafue River at Kasabushi Campsite (full board).
You will have the whole day to do game viewing in the area along the Shishamba River, a well-known habitat for lions. Kafue is also known for its wide range of antelope species and big herds of elephants. You can also book optional activities at the lodge (game walk and boat cruise). The camping will be next to the Kafue River at Kasabushi Campsite (full board).
In the morning, you will pack up camp and head further north to the next stop at Mayukuyuku Camp. You will have two days to do game drives in this area. There are several small rivers cross this area. These leave a number of waterholes in the dry season for the animals to quench their thirst. Wild dogs which roam large areas of the park, cheetah, lion, as well as the elusive leopard, are among the inhabitants here. The camping will be on the banks of the Kafue River at Mayukuyuku Campsite (full board).
You will pack up the camp and head to Lusaka, then drop off at your accommodation or airport. Breakfast will be provided.
Bundu Adventures uses Land Rover Tdi with extended chassis to accommodate 10 bucket seats (eight window seats and two seats in the middle in the front row as well as back row respectively). The vehicle is specially adapted (double shocks and double coil springs, etc.) to guarantee a comfortable drive on the bumpy tracks in the African wilderness.
There is space for hand luggage, cameras, etc. in front of the first row of seats (above the driver and co-driver) as well as between the second and third row of seats. There is also space to stow luggage beneath the seats. The side doors can be folded down to allow easy access into the vehicle. The vehicle is open on all sides but can be closed completely with windows for long distance journeys. The Land Rover is equipped with a fixed roof (two of the Land Rovers are fitted with detachable roofs).
The trailer is fitted with a mobile kitchen. The luggage, tents, and camping equipment is also packed in here. Two large collapsible tables (two meters long) are carried on safari. Camping chairs (collapsable), grill, dishes, pots, tablecloths, coffee mugs, glasses (for wine and juice), etc. are part of the campsite inventory and are all packed away in the trailer. The lighting in the evening consists of camping lamps (connected to the car battery) and lanterns (candles) on the tables.
The conditions of the roads vary every year depending on rainfall. The tracks are often only patched up after the rainy season and occasionally, Bundu Adventures has to pave a short road section or remove a tree that has been pushed across the road by an elephant. River crossing on the way is rarely a serious obstacle as the Land Rovers are well-equipped to deal with these circumstances: elevated air intake for the engine (‘snorkel’) and modified ventilation for the gearbox and axles to prevent water entering into the drive train.
The crew consists of a local driver / guide and a trained cook who also acts as a general camp helper. The crew will do most of the work involved in a mobile safari (packing the trailer, putting up tents, etc.) but with the occasional assistance of the participants so things will get done quicker.
You will be served full board meals including breakfasts, lunches and dinners. A small freezer is built into the Land Rover to keep perishables (meat, cheese, etc.) fresh. Bundu Adventures also offers cold drinks to the guests. For this purpose, Bundu Adventures uses a cooler box filled with ice. Fruit juice (mostly fresh fruit juice from South Africa, occasionally Bundu Adventures offers fruit juice concentrate) and drinking water (groundwater or filtered water) are available throughout the journey.
Alcoholic beverages are not included and can be purchased en-route. Beer (330 milliliters) costs approximately 1 EUR and wine costs approximately 8 EUR per liter (depending on the quality). You may want to purchase canned beer and preferably wine in boxes. Bottles are always at risk on the bad roads. The meals are prepared from fresh and healthy ingredients. Canned foods are avoided where possible and only offered occasionally where fresh food is not available.
Fresh meat and vegetables are an important part of the menu. Vegetarian cooking is offered, depending on the preference of participants. A full vegetarian menu can be organized with prior notice. Meat is purchased in modern supermarkets (Lusaka) and in clean modern butcheries on the way. The quality of meat in Zambia is very good. Vegetables and fruit are purchased in the towns and villages, sometimes fresh from small private vegetable gardens.
