Wildlife to expect in Masai Mara
- The Big Five animals: Lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. They are magnificent and usually the main event of a safari in Masai Mara.
- Wildebeest migration – easily one of the most spectacular wildlife migration events on our planet. You can experience this amazing phenomenon in Masai Mara.
- Cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and hippopotamuses
Location
The Masai Mara is surrounded by a few charming communities and stunning landscapes that add to its allure. Here's what you can expect in and around the neighborhood:
Wildlife and safari experiences
- Game drives: The main attraction, of course, is the wildlife. Visitors can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives that offer opportunities to spot rare animals in their natural habitat.
- Hot air balloon safaris: For a unique perspective, you can experience a hot air balloon safari, soaring over the Mara plains at dawn and observing the wildlife from above. You can enjoy this activity at an additional cost.
- Mara river: Home to crocodiles and hippos, the Mara River is a critical part of the migration route, making it a prime spot for wildlife watching.
Maasai cultural experiences
- Maasai villages: You can visit Maasai villages (not included in the price) near the reserve and learn about the traditional lifestyles of the Maasai people, including their customary dances, songs, and traditional crafts. The Maasai are semi-nomadic herders, and their history and culture are closely tied to the land they inhabit.
- Maasai Mara’s name: The name "Masai Mara" is derived from the Maasai people and the word "Mara", which means "spotted" in the Maasai language, referring to the leopard’s spots, which are seen across the reserve.
Nearby attractions
- Lake Victoria: Located around 4–5 hours drive from the Masai Mara, Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. It's a serene stop, offering boating and fishing opportunities in a stunning setting.
- Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park: About 3–4 hours away, Naivasha is known for its tranquil lake, ideal for boat rides and bird watching. Nearby Hell’s Gate National Park offers hiking, cycling, and gorge exploration—a unique contrast to the Mara's wide plains.
- Nakuru National Park: Approximately 4–5 hours from Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru in Nakuru National Park is famous for its flamingos and rhinoceros sightings.
Local markets and souvenirs
- Maasai markets: Outside the reserve, in towns like Narok, you’ll find Maasai markets offering handmade beadwork, wood carvings, and traditional Maasai jewelry—perfect for souvenirs.
- Traditional Maasai art and crafts: The Maasai people are known for their intricate beadwork and brightly colored clothing, which you can purchase directly from the source.
