During this safari, you will stay at Selous Hippo Camp in Selous Game Reserve for two nights. Hippo Camp is located just outside the Selous Game Reserve, close to Mtemere gate. It is beautifully set right on the banks of the Rufiji River, surrounded by lush riverine forest. A close-by pond attracts herds of elephant, giraffe, warthog, and other game that can be clearly viewed from your tree-hut as they come to quench their thirst.

The dining area, as well as the tents all, face the river and you can enjoy your sundowner on front-row as the sun sinks over the water in an explosion of orange, yellow, red, pink, and the sounds of the African night set in. Your canvas tented huts blend harmoniously into the camp’s natural surroundings. They all face the Rufiji and allow for a cool and pleasant flow of river breeze.

Gecko Adventure Tanzania has also introduced some VIP wooden huts, a couple with double story rooms, and one with a single room raised on poles high above the ground. Each room has twin beds, en-suite bathrooms, and a relaxing little verandah.

Program

By road from Dar es Salaam, the trip takes roughly five hours via Kibiti. The first two hours are traveled on tarmac, while the remaining time is on poor conditioned dirt road.

Day 1 - Drive to Selous Game Reserve

Get ready for a morning drive to Selous Game Reserve, arriving at the camp in time for lunch. Then, you can enjoy an afternoon boat safari on the mighty Rufiji River. Boating along one of the rivers of the Selous is a great way to see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, waterbucks, and buffaloes along the riverbanks. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.

Day 2 - Explore Selous Game Reserve

Today, you will take part in a full-day game drives with picnic lunches. Alternatively, you may decide to take a walking safari, which is possible and offers a totally different experience to game drives. Approaching animals on foot is a completely different experience than doing it in a vehicle. It is also a chance to get close and personal with some of the finer details of the African bush, like birds, trees, and plants.

You can also extend your walking safari into a multi-day walking safari and walk from point to point, camping along the way.

Day 3 - Drive to Dar Es Salaam

Get ready for an early morning pre-breakfast walking safari, returning to camp for late breakfast. The rest of the morning is at leisure. Later, you will drive back to Dar Es Salaam.
