If you’ve ever done a search for safaris on the web, chances are you’ve encountered the term ‘The Big Five animals’ or ‘The Big Five’ game safaris amongst your results. Though it may sound straightforward, there are many misconceptions about the five species of the African wildlife included within the group.
Consisting of the African lion, African leopard, African elephant, the Cape buffalo, and the endangered black rhino, the Big Five are the ‘celebrities’ of the African bush. When my husband first proposed the idea of climbing Mount Kinabalu, I was hesitant. It wasn’t because I was unfit, or afraid of heights. It wasn’t because I was afraid of an adventure. In fact, I was fit, had no fear of heights and adventure was my middle name. I was hesitant because I feared the idea of climbing a mountain. They always seemed daunting and unattainable.
My first encounter with a rhino was in a zoo in Asia. As a young girl, I came face to face with a Sumatran rhino; similar to the ones my great grandmother had told me that she had seen roaming in the Borneo jungles. Though large in stature, it had a quiet nature about it, seemingly friendly. I remember being in awe of this creature, wondering if I would ever spot it in the wild.
Part of the unassuming thrill of a safari is the possibility of coming close to danger and looking it in the eye. It is in the possibility of staring down at it, knowing full well that very little sits between you and possible chaos that kicks your adrenaline into overdrive and have you on the edge of your seats.
Doing things for the first time is exciting and fun, but it can also be a bit scary. Especially when it comes to safaris – a situation that puts you in a new country surrounded by wild animals! That said, once you know you’re in good hands, the anxiety dissipates and you’re left with the freedom to make the most out of your adventure.
Often referred to as Gentle Giants, elephants are highly intelligent creatures with a brain structure, social structure and behavior that are strikingly similar to ours. They reach puberty when they are around 13 years old, give birth to a single calf and in rare cases to twins, and their median life expectancy is 70 years. Sounds pretty familiar, doesn’t it?
With short coarse hair and a permanent angry look on their faces, Cape buffaloes appear hostile towards everyone and everything around them. These large bovines display imposing horns shaped like question marks, which come in handy when they need to protect themselves against predators, to make way through the herd or to fight for dominance.
What is the first animal that springs to mind when thinking about an African safari? The lion, of course, the King of Beasts. And for good reason – with a hair-raising roar and kingly appearance, it truly deserves its reputation. Throughout history, it has stood as a symbol of strength, courage, nobility and chivalry, and is currently present on the coats of arms of numerous European countries.
The Big Five are the most renowned, searched for and recognizable of all African animals. They are truly impressive but, despite their nickname, they are not necessarily the biggest or the most dangerous. In fact, towards the end of the 19th century, the term referred to Africa’s most difficult animals to hunt on foot.
Thousands of years before the Europeans began colonizing Africa, the continent’s inhabitants set out to colonize the world. Today, it remains a culturally rich territory, with the majority of its people of indigenous origins, quite different from one another in terms of language, culture and traditions.
