Programme
Day-by-day program
Day 1: Murchison Falls National Park
The adventure kicks off at 08:00 when your professional driver-guide picks you up from the airport or your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. After a quick tour briefing, you’ll embark on a drive of about 170 km (two and a half to three hours) northwest to Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch.
This is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos. Rhinos disappeared from Uganda in the early 1980s, but thanks to Ziwa’s efforts, it is now a thriving breeding ground for white rhinos. During the two-hour visit, you’ll track these magnificent creatures on foot with a local expert ranger, learning about their fascinating behavior up close.
Afterward, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at the sanctuary before continuing your journey to Murchison Falls National Park, about 120 kilometers (three hours) away. This park, Uganda’s largest, lies on the shores of Lake Albert, where the mighty River Nile surges through a narrow gap, creating the breathtaking Murchison Falls - the world’s most powerful waterfall.
- Dinner and overnight at Murchison River Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Paraa Safari Lodge
Day 2: Game drive and boat trip at Murchison Falls
After an early breakfast, you’ll head out for a half-day game drive on the northern bank of the Nile. There, you can spot elephants, leopards, Rothschild giraffes, Jackson hartebeests, lions, oribis, waterbucks, and many savannah and woodland birds.
After lunch, you’ll enjoy a relaxing three-hour Nile cruise, getting a close-up view of the wildlife. You’ll see hippos bathing, elephants drinking, and crocodiles lounging on the shores. The cruise will take you to the base of the falls, where you can see the powerful spray and hear the thunderous roar of the water as it plunges down.
- Overnight at Murchison River Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Paraa Safari Lodge
Day 3: Visit the top of the falls and transfer to Kibale Forest
After a tasty breakfast, you’ll visit the top of the Murchison Falls, where you’ll be amazed by the power of the mighty Nile. The Nile River, which is about 50 meters wide, crashes through a narrow eight-meter gap and plunges 45 meters in a series of impressive cascades.
You can view the falls from several scenic spots, making it a perfect moment for photos. After enjoying the falls, you’ll begin your journey south to Fort Portal. The drive will take about (366km) seven hours, but along the way, you'll see beautiful views of small African villages and banana plantations. You’ll arrive in Fort Portal at around lunchtime.
While the fort that gave the town its name no longer stands, Fort Portal is still a charming town, nestled beneath the famous Mountains of the Moon and surrounded by tea plantations. You’ll enjoy lunch at one of the best restaurants in town, then continue to your lodge near Kibale Forest, where you'll arrive in the early evening.
- Overnight at Chimpanzee Forest Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Crater Safari Lodge
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and transfer to Queen Elizabeth NP
Day 4 kicks off with a hearty breakfast at around 06:00 before you head to Kibale Forest to track chimpanzees in their natural home. Along the way, you might spot other fascinating creatures like colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and red-tailed monkeys.
The trek itself will last around two to four hours, with an hour spent observing the chimps in their wild environment. After the chimp trek, you’ll enjoy lunch before setting off on a three-hour drive to Queen Elizabeth NP. As you travel, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of lush agricultural landscapes, villages, and the Ruwenzori. You’ll even cross the equator!
Upon entering the park, expect to see herds of Ugandan kobs, with the chance to spot elephants and buffalo grazing in the distance. After a day full of stunning sights, you’ll check into your lodge, unwind, and prepare for the exciting game drives the following day.
- Overnight at Enganzi Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Park View Lodge
Day 5: Game drive and boat trip, Queen Elizabeth NP
The day will begin early as you go on a three-to-four-hour game drive, looking for Uganda kobs, lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and other wild animals in their natural home. You might also get a chance to see the giant forest hog, possibly the most interesting pig on earth.
After the game drive, you will return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you will enjoy a two-hour boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway that connects Lake Rutanzige (Lake Edward) and Lake Katunguru (Lake George).
Keep your eyes peeled for exciting wild- and birdlife drawn to the channel and see how many hippos you can spot. The area has one of the world's highest concentrations of these hefty river-dwellers year-round.
- Overnight at Enganzi Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Park View Lodge
Day 6: Tree-climbing lions and transfer to Bwindi
On the way to Bwindi, you’ll drive through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth NP, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Unlike the lions in other areas of Africa, these lions have learned to climb trees. While seeing the tree-climbing lions isn’t guaranteed, a stop at Ishasha is still a great experience!
After Ishasha, you’ll continue on a beautiful drive through rolling hills and terraced fields before arriving at Orugano Lodge, where you’ll stay for the next few nights.
- Overnight at Orugano Lodge
Day 7: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
Step into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with expert guides for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: gorilla trekking. Walk through the dense rainforest, following signs of these gentle giants, and get the chance to meet their curious eyes from a respectful distance. Watch the gorilla family interact and go about their daily lives, marveling at the rare opportunity to see their world up close.
Be prepared for a trek of two to seven hours through steep, muddy terrain, and possibly rain, before you encounter the gorillas. For conservation reasons, you'll spend only one hour with them. Your guide will also give you important tips on how to behave around these amazing creatures.
- Overnight at Orugano Lodge
Day 8: Golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga
This day will offer a special chance to trek the endangered golden monkeys at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or you can spend the morning exploring the local communities.
You can choose to visit the Batwa community to learn about their unique way of life or go on a hike to Sabyinyo Volcano. Other activities include canoeing at Lake Mutanda or a nature experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. After the morning's activities, you’ll drive back to Orugano Lodge for relaxation.
- Overnight at Orugano Lodge
Day 9: Transfer to Lake Mburo
On this day, you’ll travel from Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park. Upon arrival at Lake Mburo, you can choose to take an afternoon boat cruise to spot wildlife or enjoy a night game drive.
- Overnight at Rwakobo Safari Lodge
- For upgrade, you can stay at Mihingo Lodge
Day 10: Game walk at Mburo and transfer to Entebbe
You’ll start the day early with a guided nature walk by a ranger. Lake Mburo is one of the few savannah parks in Uganda where you can enjoy a safari on foot. After breakfast, you’ll drive back to Entebbe, stopping at the equator for photos, coffee, or some shopping for local crafts.
You’ll arrive in Entebbe late in the afternoon. Depending on your flight time, Orugano Safaris will take you to the airport for your journey home. They look forward to welcoming you again!
