This will be an epic safari that will take place in Victoria Falls in a superbly personalized manner as well as Hwange National Park which has the honor of being Zimbabwe’s largest and most diverse wildlife area when it comes to mammal and bird species. The trip will focus on both pure safari in Hwange and an excellent assortment of activities like boating and guided tours in Victoria Falls. The combination of 3 specific Imvelo Camps ensures a brilliant balance of luxury and adventure all backed up by breathtaking scenery and exceptional game viewing.
Zambezi Sands is owned and operated by Imvelo Safari Lodges, a company with considerable interest in responsible tourism. It is situated in a remote part of Zambezi National Park, right on the banks of the Zambezi River and upstream of Victoria Falls. It is 45 minutes’ drive along the forest route from Victoria Falls town (one and a half hours by river route) and 40 minutes by boat from the falls themselves.
The main lodge at Zambezi Sands is a spacious canvas tent raised on wooden decking. This is open plan, home to a lounge, dining room, and bar. The lounge has sumptuous armchairs and sofas, ornate lighting fixtures, and ceiling fans. The dining room is spacious and equally well appointed with separate tables accompanied by very comfortable seating. The bar has a simple yet classy design. All areas open up onto a deck with superb views across the river. The deck contains a bonfire area and more comfortable seating, in addition to a jetty, departure point for many activities.
All tents are located on the banks of the Zambezi, raised on stilts and connected to the main lodge via wooden walkways. They are hexagonal and pleasantly decorated with dark furniture, white walls, neutral-tone rugs, and a few brightly colored cushions. Each includes overhead fans, a lounge area, electronic safe, and well-stocked mini bar.
The en-suite facilities occupy a separate room in the middle of the tent and consist of a flush toilet, washbasin, and freestanding bath with plenty of complimentary toiletries. There are also indoor and outdoor showers. Finally, each tent has its own deck with plunge pool and amazing views of the majestic Zambezi.
Camelthorn Lodge is owned and operated by Imvelo Safari Lodges. The lodge is situated in shady acacia woodlands on the edge of the Ngamo Plains in the southeast of Hwange National Park. The lodge derives its name from the impressive ancient camelthorn tree at its center which spans a patio approximately 35 meters in length. This patio contains plenty of chairs and tables for outdoor dining. The main building, a U-shaped stone structure with a thatched roof, extends around the camelthorn tree with 2 wings either side of a reception area.
Accommodation at Camelthorn consists of 8 forest villas, each made of concrete with a corrugated iron roof. These are nestled into the trees and positioned well apart from each other. All boast a spacious bedroom with beds arranged as 1 king or twins. There is also a lounge area and an en-suite with toilet, double basin, shower, and bath with views from a picture window. Other features are a ceiling fan, fireplace, mini bar, tea / coffee tray, electronic safe, and complimentary robes. All interiors are stylishly decorated with dark teak furniture and colorful floors. Outside each villa, there is a patio for private dining, a hammock, and a spiral staircase leading up to a balconied area with a daybed perfect for relaxing in between activities.
Nehimba Lodge has been named best safari lodge in Zimbabwe by the country’s Safari Operators Association. It is located in the north of Hwange National Park within a private concession totaling some 3,200 hectares of game-filled wooded valleys and hills. The communal facilities of Nehimba Lodge are situated within a raised and open-fronted teak-and-thatch structure at the center of camp. They consist of a large lounge and dining area with bar spreading onto a lower deck from which guests enjoy an excellent view of a waterhole. There is a small swimming pool that is also ideal for watching a game. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge.
Nehimba’s guest accommodation comprises seven chalets spaced in 2 rows either side of the main building. These too are constructed from teak and thatch raised above the ground. All rooms include a fan, safe, facilities for making tea and coffee, en-suite bathroom with slipper bath, outdoor shower, and private balcony overlooking the waterhole. The interiors combine elegance and comfort with neutral fabrics and warm wood.
Following a short road transfer from Victoria Falls Hotel, you will meet your safari guide at Zambezi Sands Hub, who will transfer you through to the lodge. Here, you will have an option of partaking in a variety of activities including walking safaris, game drives, boating safaris, and guided tours to Victoria Falls. All in all, 3 nights at Zambezi Sands will allow you to relax after a long flight while taking in the best of what this area has to offer.
From Zambezi Sands, it is on to your first stop in Hwange National Park where Camelthorn Lodge provides the perfect base. As game viewing around Camelthorn will be enjoyed largely in a private concession, safari experiences here will be very private and personalized. Furthermore, visitors have the opportunity to visit Ngamo Village and the school there. The school and village are both supported by Imvelo Safari Lodges as part of their community initiatives program.
Following a completely unique 2-hour rail transfer by way of the ‘Elephant Express’, you will meet your Nehimba guide upon arrival at Hwange Main Camp, who will game-drive you to the lodge. Situated on a private concession, Nehimba offers a first-rate range of game-viewing activities such as night game drives and walking safaris. The camp and the waterhole as well as swimming pool in front of your lodge are a huge draw for elephants in the area. You will spend your evenings around the fire surrounded by these magnificent animals.
On the final day, you will have a game drive through your way back to the Sinamatella access point where you will change vehicles and be transferred to Victoria Falls Hotel for your flight home.
Note: This is an itinerary that Yellow Zebra Safaris has found to work extremely well. However they would be very happy to tailor this to better suit your needs. Please contact Yellow Zebra Safaris to discuss this option.
During this safari, you will visit 2 great places in Zimbabwe including Zambezi National Park and Hwange National Park. Zimbabwe is a landlocked country and one of Africa’s truly exceptional safari destinations. The quality and diversity of its national parks complement the extraordinarily high caliber of safari guides that help ensure a rich and fulfilling safari experience. The country has 4 main national parks with 2 or 3 smaller wildlife areas bringing up the rear in terms of interest.
Zimbabwe itself is incredibly hospitable and welcoming with some of the friendliest people you are likely to meet on your travels. As with most African countries, it has had a somewhat beleaguered past, but today it is very much back on everyone’s radar as a premium holiday safari destination.
