Volcanic Wonderland Safari in Russia

Kamchatka contains a huge volcanic chain with 160 volcanoes, 30 of which are active, like Klyuchevskoy (the highest in Eurasia). It also has a great variety of fauna including notably the brown bear, with a population of approximately 1,400 individuals spread throughout the peninsula. Other terrestrial mammals on Kamchatka are the red foxes, moose, wolverine, weasel, and various species of squirrels. Notable among birds is the Steller’s sea eagle, the largest of the eagles that inhabit the planet.

Accommodation

You will be accommodated in tents, wooden huts, and guesthouses.

Program

Day 1: Arrival

Flight arrival and meeting at the Yelizovo Airport (PKC) in Kamchatka are planned. You will be transferred to your accommodation in a guesthouse in Yelizovo town, about 15 minutes from the airport and located in a magnificent setting overlooking the Avachinskaya and Koryasky volcanoes. Dinner and overnight will be at the guesthouse.

Day 2: Kozyrevsk

You will have breakfast at the guesthouse and depart to the town of Kozyrevsk in central Kamchatka, making a lunch stop in the town of Milkovo. The vehicle used for the transfers is a 6x6 truck. Accommodation will be in Kozyrevsk, in wooden huts. From this area you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Uskhovsky, Klyuchevskoy, Kamen, Bezymianny, and Tolbachik volcanoes.

Day 3: Tolbachik Volcano

Transfer to the foothills of Tolbachik Volcano and camp in the area of the lava flows from the last eruption in 2013. After lunch, you head to the upper cones of Tolbachik volcanic complex where you will have magnificent views over the volcanic plateau.

Day 4: Tolbachik

Transfer to the dead forest of Tolbachik where you will see the devastation caused by the great eruption in 1975. This area was used by the Russian space agency to test space vehicles. You will visit an area full of lava caves and you will have the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding volcanic fields and two magnificent active volcanoes: The Kizimen and Kronotsky (one of the most symmetrical and beautiful volcanoes on the planet).

Day 5: Tolbachik

At 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. you will start a trek to the main crater of Tolbachik Volcano. You will gain a height of 1,650 meters. It is the largest crater of Kamchatka and one of the largest in the world.

Day 6: Bezymianny Volcano

You will move by truck to the west side of Bezymianny Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes of Kamchatka. From here you can see two giants: the Klyuchevskoy and Kamen volcanoes. This whole area is home to the Kamchatka’s brown bear.

Day 7: Klyuchevskoy

You will go by truck to the highest point of the volcanic plateau of Klyuchevskoy where the greatest gorge of the entire peninsula is located. This is a really wild place and a fantastic opportunity to enjoy very unique views of the following volcanoes: Kamen, Klyuchevskoy, Zimina, Ushkovsky, Tolbachik, and Bezymianny.

Day 8: Yelizovo

Return to the guesthouse in Yelizovo (the same one of the first day). The trip will take you all day.

Day 9: Gorely Volcano

You will head to the foothills of Gorely Volcano where you will establish your base camp. Ascent to the upper craters of Gorely (trekking for seven to eight hours) up to a height of 1,828 meters. From the top (weather permitting) you will enjoy a breathtaking view of several volcanoes such as Vilyuchinsky, Opala, Mutnovsky, Avachinskaya, and Koryasky.

Day 10: Mutnovsky Volcano

Transfer to the Mutnovsky Volcano area. Ascent the crater of the volcano, where you can be amazed by the fumaroles, sulfur deposits, and glaciers inside the craters, an absolutely stunning place. The trek will last for nine to ten hours. Please note that sometimes it is not possible to access the Mutnovsky area due to the snow. In this case, the itinerary will have to be changed.

Day 11: Hot springs of Rodnikovaya Valley

Visit the hot springs of Rodnikovaya Valley, where, after days of physical activity, you will relax in a spectacular location. After lunch, you will return to Yelizovo.

Day 12: Avachinskaya Volcano

Transfer to the slopes of Avachinskaya Volcano. Ascent Mount Verblyund where you will enjoy a great overlooking point. You will gain 350 meters high on a trek that will take about three to four hours. Accommodation will be in wooden huts.

Day 13: Avachinskaya Volcano

Ascent Avachinskaya Volcano (2,741 meters high). The trek will take you to one of the best view points on Kamchatka, with panoramic views of the magnificent Avacha Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and Koryasky Volcano. At the summit, you will see the amazing red crater and the fumaroles of Avachinskaya.

Day 14: Yelizovo

You will depart for Yelizovo. Once there, you will visit the fish market where delicious salmon and the famous Kamchatka crab is sold. On this day, there is the possibility of taking a boat trip around Avacha Bay (not included).

Day 15: Departure

Transfer to the airport.
