Location

The Lower Zambezi National Park lies in the lower Zambezi valley, a huge rift in the earth’s crust through which the mighty Zambezi river meanders through; The park covers an area of 4,092 square kilometers with 120 kilometers of river frontage. Just 30 minutes from Lusaka by chartered flight, Lower Zambezi is most likely Zambia’s most picturesque park and is also surprisingly remote. The park lies opposite the Mana Pools reserve, so both sides of Zambezi river are a massive wildlife sanctuary. The distinguished features are the escarpment on the north, the river and numerous islands, and lagoons and floodplains that act as a magnet for most animals.

The Lower Zambezi National Park and the Chiawa game management area is the host for many mammals, reptiles, and birds such as herds of elephants which up to 100 elephants can be often seen on the river edge, prides of lions, leopard, big herds of buffalo, vast hippo pods, zebra, hyena, crocodile, waterbuck, kudu, porcupine, civet, genet, honey badger, and jackals are some of the animals found.

A steep escarpment on the northern side of the Lower Zambezi National Park acts as a physical barrier to most of the park’s animal species making them more concentrated in the valley floor along the river. The wildlife and birdlife in the park are outstanding, with an estimated of 400 species of birds and 50 mammal species in the area, there is also a variety of trees, grasses, and wildflowers. The bird life along the river is exceptional there are fish eagles, carmine bee-eaters, red-winged pratincole, elegant crested guinea fowl, black eagle, quelea, Narina trogon, trumpeter hornbill, Meyers parrot, and Lillian lovebird which are found in the Lower Zambezi.

The Lower Zambezi is a wildlife sanctuary with beautiful scenery; this park is famous for canoeing safaris, and river safari / cruise, and fishing expeditions. Being able to view wildlife at close quarters from the river makes Lower Zambezi very special. With a variety of activities offered both on the mighty Zambezi and on land, you will definitely have a magical wild experience and an amazing safari here.
