Kafue National Park is one of the largest parks in Africa and the largest national park in Zambia, covering a total of 22,400 square kilometers. Despite its size and prominent location, it still remains largely unexplored and untouched although the recent year has seen the growth of safari camps and lodges.
Thanks to its huge size and variety of habitat types, Kafue holds a fantastic diversity of wildlife. The diversity of habitat such as wetlands, savannah, and woodlands makes Kafue National Park both wildlife and bird sanctuary.
The Kafue is not about the sheer numbers of wildlife seen in a day but about the diversity of wildlife. You can see rare and elusive antelope such as the blue and yellow-backed duiker in the thickets, sitatunga and lechwe in swamps, roan, sable, and hartebeest in the Miombo woodlands. Meanwhile, elephant, cheetah, and leopard which is not found in Luangwa or lower Zambezi can be found here.
Kafue is believed to have the highest population of wild dogs in Africa. Moreover, buffalo, zebra, hippo, puku, sable, impala, hartebeest, bushbuck, roan, waterbuck, bush baby, grysbok, oribi, aardvark, pangolin, and civet are just some of the mammals of Kafue. Kafue has over 158 recorded mammal species.
Kafue boasts of more than 497 of 733 Zambian bird species, making it one of the best locations in Africa for birding. Some of the species found in the Kafue National Park are African wattled and crowned crane, fish eagle, woolly necked stork, saddle billed stork, goliath heron, ground hornbill, African finfoot, Pel’s owl, purple-crested lourie, and Chaplin’s barbet. In addition, the Busanga Plains is one of the few known breeding sites of the endangered wattled cranes.
