This safari is a camping safari. The tents are dome-shaped with built-in ground-sheets and screened windows and doors. They allow standing headroom and are simple to put up, though your guide will help with this. The mattresses you’ll find inside are approximately 5-centimeter thick and covers are supplied, along with all other camping equipment, including chairs with backrests, tables, washstands, cutlery and crockery.

If you wish to sleep in a sleeping bag (which you will do during winter months), you can hire them from Wild Dog Safaris or bring your own. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the tents are 100% bug proof, as long as they are securely closed. You will have the same tent for the duration of your trip and it is up to you to make sure that you do not have any uninvited guests in the middle of the night.

There will be laundry facilities (with washing machines) in the bigger towns such as Swakopmund and Windhoek. While out on the road, Wild Dog Safaris recommends that you pack a bar or tube of laundry detergent that you’ll be able to use for smaller items of clothing at your campsite. With Namibia’s dry climate, items normally dry quite quickly overnight.

This tour departs on every Tuesday from Windhoek and back to Windhoek on Thursday, late afternoon / early evening

Day 1: Windhoek - Sesriem area

You will be collected at your Windhoek accommodation between 08:00 and 08:30. You travel out over the Eros Mountains and along scenic roads on your way south-west to the desert. You also pass over part of the Naukluft Mountains which are of particular interest for the ancient geological history of this part of the country. You'll be heading down from Namibia’s central plateau by way of the beautiful Remhoogte Pass, then you reach open plains and the tiny settlement of Solitaire.

You cross some open grass savannah and farmlands before the terrain gives way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib. You aim to arrive at the camp during the late afternoon and watch the colors glow and change on distant mountains to the east.

  • Meals: lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation: camping
  • Distance: 350 kilometers

Day 2: Sesriem area - Sossusvlei - Sesriem area

A pre-dawn start is essential this morning as you want to catch the soft light of the sunrise on the desert. After passing through Sesriem, the gateway to the dunes, you head into the heart of the dune field, reaching Sossusvlei on foot, trekking the last 5 kilometers through the dunes. Landscape photo opportunities abound in the cool of the morning with dawn’s soft light first illuminating the dunes from crest down the back slope, then blazing orange everywhere, creating a powerful contrasting vista across the whole desert.

Ancient mineral pans, stunted camel thorn trees, and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or ostrich makes it essential to remember your camera. You spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei and also visiting Dune 45. As the day wears on, you return to Sesriem for lunch, escaping the heat of the afternoon. As the day cools off in the late afternoon, you will take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon.

  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Accommodation: camping

Day 3: Sesriem area - Windhoek

After breakfast, you begin your journey back to Windhoek following a different route, ascending the massive Gamsberg Pass in the Khomas Hochland Mountain Range on your way back to civilization. You are due back in Windhoek late afternoon / early evening and you will be dropped off at your accommodation on your return.

  • Meals: breakfast and lunch
  • Distance: 450 kilometers

You will use our Toyota Dyna 14 seater vehicles with pop-tops, like the one below (5-14 guests). The vehicles have modified seating for more leg room and there are large windows for game viewing, while the pop-tops are great for photographing game. Smaller groups 1-4 guests) will use Toyota Quantum / Landcruiser with a purpose built trailer.
