This combination of game viewing on horseback and beach riding along the Wild Coast will give you an authentic taste of Africa! The horse safari is a wonderful combination of beach and bush riding through a stunning eco environment with breathtaking views from every hill top. You will get to ride horses through a stunning game reserve filled with non-dangerous game, where giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and a multitude of different antelopes can be closely approached on horseback.
You will spend four nights on the Wild Coast (two nights at Trennery’s and two nights at Wavecrest Hotel) and three nights at the five-star Miarestate Hotel and Spa in East London, on a private game reserve. Both Trennery's and Wavecrest hotels along the coast are simple but delightful seaside resorts designed for laid-back holidays.
This eight-day, seven-night safari is a wonderful combination of game viewing on horseback and beach riding along the Wild Coast. It is ideal for most riders who are comfortable in the saddle and can walk, trot, and canter on a well-schooled horse. Advanced riders will be delighted with the different pace options of the responsive fit horses.
You will ride horses through a stunning game reserve filled with non-dangerous game, where giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and a variety of antelopes can be closely approached on horseback. Ride across rolling hills and into deep forested kloofs searching for the elusive kudu and bush buck. Then canter down endless beaches and wonder through rural Xhosa villages all from the back of beautiful, well-schooled horses.
The first part of this trail takes you on a four-night, five-day trail along the Wild Coast where you can explore the wilderness and the authentic taste of rural Africa. This incorporates part of the Wild Coast horse trail with two nights at Trennery’s Hotel and two nights at Wavecrest Hotel. You will experience the stunning beaches and spectacular landscape that has become synonymous with these Wild Coast horse riding holidays.
On the fifth day, you will return from Wavecrest to Kei Mouth in the late afternoon to be transferred to the five-star Miarestate Hotel and Spa for a three-night, three-day stay on a private game reserve. Once you have arrived at Miarestate, you will have an evening of wining and dining and sumptuous accommodation.
In the mornings you will be taken to the stables to meet the horses, mount up, and meander off to explore the estate. Non-dangerous game will cross your path as you ride through the rolling hills and canter over cliff tops.
When not riding, you will have the afternoons to be pampered at the spa, explore on foot the private beach, or enjoy other activities that the hotel offers. In the evenings, your every need will be catered for by the five-star staff. Decadent food and fine wines cater for the connoisseur and those who love the finer things in life.
This safari is for riders who have ridden before and are comfortable and confident at a trot and canter. The horses are of a very high quality and are well schooled. They are gentle and reliable enough for the holiday rider, but also of such a standard that the more experienced rider will have a good time. The trail pace varies from walking through the country side to enable good wildlife viewing, to long trots and canters on open plains, and fast gallops down the beaches if wanted.
Plan to arrive in East London on SA flight 471 at 11:30 a.m. A shuttle will meet and transfer you to Kei Mouth, just over one hour drive from East London Airport (ELS). Gather at the Kei Mouth Country Club for a light lunch and to change into your riding clothes.
In the afternoon, the first part of your adventure begins. You will venture across the Great Kei River, loading the horses onto the pontoon and the beaches of the Wild Coast. A relaxing ride along the beach brings you to Trennery's Hotel around sunset.
Today is about exploring and ensuring that you are well matched to your horse. The trails during the morning take you through a kaleidoscope of mysterious waterfalls, rolling hillsides, a rural Xhosa village, and of course a mandatory beach canter. After a picnic lunch, more water falls and long canters over the endless hillsides ensure that you have had a good first days riding!
Heading north, you will pass the remains of the Jacaranda ship wreck and depending on the tide, either cross the river at the mouth or turn inland across country and through rural villages to cross the Kobonqaba River further upstream. The horses set a steady pace at trot and canter as you head towards Wavecrest Hotel in time for lunch.
During the afternoon, riders will enjoy a relaxed out ride along the ocean edge and through ancient sand dune forests. Drinks on the deck at sunset as you sit and watch the great crested cranes come in to roost and put an end to a perfect day.
The departure time this morning is dictated by the tide. It is a fantastic three-hour ride either up the beach or back across country through rolling hills and traditional villages, or the other way around, depending on the tides. Either way you get to ride on the hard wet beach at low tide, and the gallop is exhilarating! You will be back at the hotel in time for lunch. Alternatively, if the weather and tides are favorable, you may take a picnic.
This afternoon has a choice of activities. You can take a boat trip up the river and explore the stunning mangrove estuary of the Nxaxo River by boat, hike, fish, or just kick back and relax in the Jacuzzi. The afternoon is flexible as there are so many options to explore!
Today, you will start your journey back to Kei Mouth. Ride inland this morning, crossing the river high up and away from the tide's influence. The slay paths and track offer great canters as you wind your way back to the beach. Ride back past Trennery’s Hotel and call in a for a great pub lunch.
Then head towards Kei Mouth and the pontoon crossing before dropping the horses off at the paddocks around 4 p.m. The hotel shuttle will be there to meet and transfer you to Miarestate Hotel and Spa on a private game reserve.
You will be up early this morning - a quick cup of coffee or tea and a rusk gets you going and up into the saddle. A leisurely three-hour ride out exploring the reserve in search of giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, blesbuck, kudu, bushbuck, warthog, and a multitude of other antelope species. The rolling hills offer lovely canters and stunning views across the bush veld and over cliffs into the crashing sea.
Brunch is served at the lodge in the late morning, and you have time for a noon nap, spa treatment or a stroll around the lodge. You can go bird watching or simply enjoy sitting watching the game grazing in the gardens. An optional late afternoon sunset ride is available for those who need more saddle time!
After breakfast, you will again explore the reserve. The lodge staff will prepare the ultimate picnic bush lunch, so that you can truly enjoy being laid back and relaxed into African time. The views on the reserve are breathtaking and this is the perfect wind down to a lovely week of beach and bush riding. Later, you will hack back to the stables and then the rest of the afternoon is free to relax, be pampered in the spa, or enjoy the other hotel activities
The shuttle will pick you up to transfer you back to the airport at 2 p.m. and there is an opportunity to enjoy one last ride before it’s time to say goodbye to your horse and head home or onto new horsey horizons.
This safari will take place in South Africa, in the Wild Coast region and on a private game reserve in East London.
All meals are included in the price. Breakfast is hearty, with a selection of cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast, and the traditional bacon and eggs. Lunch varies from light dishes to a choice from a pub lunch menu. At the reserve, you will have brunch instead (a late breakfast or early lunch). Dinner is normally around 7:30 p.m. and will consist of a starter, main dish of roast meat or chicken, or of a casserole-type dish with vegetables followed by dessert.
Please book your flight to arrive at East London Airport (ELS). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request and will be charged separately. A driver from East Coast Shuttle will meet you in the arrivals hall, holding a sign saying Wild Cost Horse Trails. Alternatively, you can arrange to be picked up at Baz Bus points.
