Your Norway adventure fleet

Your home away from home, MV Malmo and the MV Freya have all the comfort you need for an exciting adventure cruise in the winter fjords of Norway.

MV Malmo

The MV Malmo is a comfortable expedition vessel built in 1943 and completely renovated in 2014. It’s a true piece of maritime history, with large wooden deck space and ‘al fresco’ dining area. With two large zodiacs and experienced expedition team, the yacht provides the ideal platform for small photography groups, families, friends and incentive, cruising the Norwegian fjords in wintertime. The vessel carries a maximum of 15 guests.

The restaurant and bar is a relaxed and cozy place for reading and working on your photos after an exciting day full of adventures. In the lounge, you can watch movies, documentaries, lectures, and briefings. It is also a convenient place to work on your camera equipment and check out your snorkel gear.

The expedition yacht accommodates 15 guests in seven cabins. All cabins are serviced daily and laundry service is available.

MV Malmo life on board - the cabins

  • Four twin cabins with upper / lower beds, shower and toilet in the cabin.
  • Two twin cabins with upper / lower beds, washbasin in the cabin and sharing shower and toilet outside the cabin.
  • One triple cabin with 1x upper / 2x lower beds, shower and toilet in the cabin.

MV Freya

The MV Freya is a robust and strong ship, built to Lloyds, unrestricted trade, +100 A1 “Ice Class 1A”, UMS. This makes her very well suitable for cruising the Arctic waters. She was completely rebuilt in 2015. The saloon is a cozy place for briefings and lectures and relaxing get-togethers for storytelling and sharing images. In the restaurant, you will be served hearty meals three times a day as well as a nice variety of wines, beer, soft drinks, tea, and coffee. The sauna on board the MV Freya is the best way to end the day!

Superior cabin

The Superior cabin has a double bed and private facilities, table and chairs. The double bed can be separated into two single beds.

Twin private cabin

This is a comfortable twin cabin with shower and toilet. All cabins are serviced daily and laundry service is available.

Day 1

Arrival at Tromso airport (TOS) and transfer to the harbor to board your vessel in the afternoon.

Day 2-6

For five full days, you follow the schools of herring and pods of orcas and humpbacks in the protected surroundings of the beautiful Norwegian fjords. Two expert guides will accompany you on your whale watching adventures. Be prepared for cold but rewarding days out at sea with spectacular sightings of a unique display of mother nature.

The combination of this natural phenomena, the beautiful ever-changing scenery of the Norwegian fjords and the amazing Northern Lights, makes this trip an exclusive experience of nature.

Have your cameras charged and whenever possible be ready to slip into the cold water for a Polar snorkel adventure. For snorkelers, a (Waterproof D9) snorkel dry suit and snorkel equipment will be provided.

If you choose not to snorkel, you can enjoy the phenomena from the spacious deck on board your ship or join the zodiac excursions for up-close whale watching and excellent photography opportunities!

During the darker hours, you will enjoy the warm and cozy comfort of the expedition yacht while expert guides entertain you with presentations and educational information on wildlife and cinematography and films. Excellent food is served with a fine selection of wines and beers.

Day 7

Disembarkation in the morning after breakfast and farewell to your crew.

Please note that Waterproof Cruises & Expeditions is always ready to alter plans accordingly to take advantage of light, weather, wildlife sightings, and other one-of-a-kind opportunities which can vary unpredictably from day to day.

They cannot guarantee that all activities and shore landings will take place or that they will include all the events they’ve outlined in advance. Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy - and excitement - of expedition-style travel, and a measure of flexibility is something all of you must bring along on the voyage.

Physical health info

When you join an expedition to the Arctic, you must be in good general health and able to walk long distances. If you join an excursion or landing, you must be able to get up and down the steep gangway from the ship to the water level to board the Zodiacs. Staff will assist you in and out of the boats. Ashore it can be slippery and rocky, therefore it is recommended that you are in good general health without any life-threatening conditions.

There have been enormous changes in the ecosystem of the Norwegian Sea in the past years. Probably the largest gathering of orcas and humpback whales in the world takes place during the winter months in the Norwegian fjords. This is linked to the enormous amount of spring-spawning herring and mackerel. Humpback whales and orcas have been sighted in large numbers feeding on herring. The combination of this natural phenomena, the beautiful ever-changing scenery of the Norwegian fjords and the amazing Northern Lights, make this trip a unique nature experience.
