Day 1

A staff member will wait for you at the airport to transfer you to Wasai Puerto Maldonado Eco Lodge, where you will be welcomed with a delicious tropical juice. After a brief explanation of the tour and accommodating the equipment, you will depart for the Trans-Oceanic highway, where you will take a dirt road to the Tambopata River. The road runs initially through plantations of local species and cattle ranches. You will have box lunch on the road.

As you get away from the highway and into the deep jungle, human presence gradually reduces until you reach the Tambopata River. There is a boat will be waiting to transfer you to Wasai Tambopata Lodge. After a 20-minute short journey, you will arrive at the lodge followed by reception and accommodation on the lodge.

After a short rest, you will make a nocturnal walk into the jungle to observe and listen to insects, bats, and frogs, and perhaps have other encounters with another nocturnal mammal. Afterward, you will have dinner and overnight in the lodge. The various sounds of the rainforest will accompany you through the first night in the Amazon. The overnight is at Wasai Tambopata Lodge.

  • Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 2: Macaw’s clay lick

Wake up early around 04:30 to begin the 60-90 minutes journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At the arrival, if weather permits, you will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an unforgettable experience that makes this one of the greatest tours in the Amazon. A light breakfast will be served (coffee or mate, fruits, and crackers) then, you will walk by the river beach searching for animal footprints.

In the middle morning, you return to the lodge to have breakfast and then take a rest to relax or do the adventure activities or enjoy the facilities and the surroundings of Wasai. Also, you will have the chance of swimming in the Tambopata River. You can do kayaking on the river either. On route, if the level of the river is adequate, you will visit the Cat Cascades. Afterward, you will return to the lodge for lunch. Lunch will be served between 13:30 to 14:00.

After lunch, you will make a short ethnobotanical walk of one kilometer until the swamp area. There, you will be able to see a different kind of forest as the trees have adapted to live in a flooded area. It is also possible to find different kind of tropical fish species as the wolf fish. Then, you will start the last trek back to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to your hotel or bus station. End of the services.

Location

Wasai Tambopata Lodge

This amazon lodge is a destination by itself. It's also used as a starting point for tours into the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, to the world largest famous macaw clay lick in the upper Tambopata River. It is verified by Rainforest Alliance as a sustainable operation.

Wasai Tambopata Lodge is located in the heart of the Amazon, approximately 50 kilometers away from Puerto Maldonado in a straight line, and approximately 120 kilometers up the river, in the heart of the Tambopata Candamo National Reserve, surrounded by national parks. There are 20 kilometers of protected forest trails around the lodge, which enhances possibilities to see Amazon wildlife.

You can visit the local community of Baltimore and share the way of life and the natural beauty such as the El Gato Waterfalls, and parrots and mammals clay licks. Up-river from the lodge, there are no more dwellings. The lack of people and the closeness to the Andes create a habitat with an abundance of flora and fauna not seen in other areas of the Amazon rainforest.

Tambopata - Candamo National Reserve

This wildlife tour will be located in Tambopata - Candamo National Reserve, Peru. Only a few minutes from Cusco, there is one of the most pristine and unspoiled areas in the Tambopata Amazon rainforest, housing more animals species than any other place on earth. Officially created in 1990, the Tambopata - Candamo National Reserved Zone is located east and south of Puerto Maldonado. It comprises one and a half million hectares (three and a half million acres) of the Madre de Dios and Puno regions.

The Tambopata National Reserve has been the subject of numerous TV documentaries. It is the place to enjoy a tour in one of the world's largest macaw and mammal's clay-lick. There is also the pristine Sandoval Lake near to the lodge. In this rainforest, you will never find two trees of the same kind. Much of this diversity is due to the special layering of plant life, the millions of insects and animals species, and the warm and humid climate of Tambopata.

The Tambopata - Candamo region holds several world records in flora and fauna species numbers for the 5,500-hectare region: 545 bird species, 1,122 butterfly species, 151 dragonfly species, and 29 tiger beetles species. In 1996, part of the area near to Bolivia was declared Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. This new addition will result in the largest bi-national park since Bolivia's Madidi National Park is right across the border. The Tambopata - Candamo Reserved Zone can be visited all year-round.

At the Tambopata National Reserve is located El Chuncho Clay Lick (Collpa). Collpa is a Quechua name for places where many animal species congregate to eat mineral-rich soil. Scientists believe that this behavior complements these animals diet. However, others believe that the ingestion of soil reduces the toxic effects of some wild fruits and seeds.

The most spectacular collpas is the Macaw Clay Licks that have made the Tambopata - Candamo Reserved Zone famous. There are hundreds of macaws and parrots species that gather in this place. Collpas are located on open, vegetation-free cliffs that are continuously shaped by dynamic rivers. Some of the common species spotted in these places are the blue-and-gold, scarlet, red-and-green macaws, and blue-headed parrots. Monkeys, tapirs, deer, and capybaras also visit collpas, but they are more frequently observed at clay licks along creeks and stream borders inside the Tambopata forest.

El Chuncho Clay Lick is a low cliff located along a tributary of the Tambopata, is a five-hour upstream trip from Puerto Maldonado (40 minutes from Wasai Lodge). You should camp a day in advance in order to make an early morning tour to visit the observation point.

Travel to the Amazon and join one of the adventure tours in the Amazon. There is still a part of this world where you can be part of nature, start an Amazon trip, start a new adventure.
