During this wildlife tour, you will be accommodated at a lodge for the first and the second night. On the fourth night, you will have a chance to sleep outside at a camp on the forest. The lodge will be with double bedrooms, bathroom, and communal eating area overlooking the Xixuau Lake.


Outings are made by canoe both by day and at night to see the fauna. A guide is provided for every two tourists and is available at all times. Hikes in the forest, overnight camping expeditions, bird watching, and getting to know the local river dwellers way of life.

The Xixuau is home to the highest concentration of giant river otters in the world and both types of river dolphin are common. cayman, monkeys, anteaters, sloths, tapir, pacas, peccaries and jaguar and ocelots are regularly sighted as well as a large variety of snakes including anaconda. Macaws, parrots, toucans, ibis, and a large variety of birds of prey are common.

Day 1: Xixuau

In the case of one to three people, you will be traveled from the town of Novo Airao (200 kilometers upriver from Manaus on the Rio Negro) by speedboat to Xixuau. This trip is approximately eight hours and in this case the supply boat travels ahead with you is carrying fuel for the return trip, ice, fruit, vegetables, and other supplies. After that, you will travel from Novo Airao to Xixuau and arrive at the late afternoon for lodging and dinner.

In the case of more people, you will travel by river boat and this takes roughly 20 hours. So, you will departure from Novo Airao and cruise up the Rio Negro, and then the Jauaperi, and finally arrive in Xixuau on pre-dawn of the day two.

Day 2: Xixuau

You will have breakfast then have a canoe trip to see the wildlife. On these canoe outing, it is very common to see giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), both types of river dolphins, cayman, many species of birds, and monkeys. You will then return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will have another canoe excursion to a different area. Afterwards, you will return to lodge for caipirinha and dinner. After dinner, it is possible to go out again as a lot of wildlife can be seen in the night: porcupine, jaguar, ocelot, cayman, snakes, birds, fish, etc.

Day 3: Xixuau

You will have breakfast and then a walk through the mainland forest to see the flora and fauna. There are many interesting species of tree, vines, flowers, etc. On these walks, it is possible to encounter wild pigs, deer, tapir, snakes, land tortoises, sloth, and again several species of monkey. You will have lunch and in the afternoon, a trip to a beach if the water is low, to see piranha, pacu, peacock bass or large catfish, followed by dinner and night outing if desired.

Day 4: Xixuau River

You will depart after having breakfast for a three-hour trip into the Xixuau River. You will make a camp and cook the lunch over an open fire. In the afternoon, you will explore the deep forest area of the upper Xixuau. You will be sleeping out in forest on the hammocks.

Day 5: Xixuau

You will have an early breakfast and hike into the forest to see the wildlife then return to lodge for a late lunch. In the afternoon, you will visit to the local community to see any projects and local craftworks.

You will awake at dawn, have breakfast in the campsite, go for a long hike into the forest, followed by returning to the camp. You will have a journey back by canoe to the lodge for a late lunch. In the afternoon, you will visit the Xixuau native community and see any of the sustainable development projects which are running at the time, also an introduction and possibility to purchase local handicrafts made from jungle products.

Day 6: Xixuau

You will have choice of any activities. In the case of the group of more than three persons, you will depart by boat after dinner to arrive in Novo Airao the following day around lunch time and transfer to Manaus on the seventh day. On this day, Visit Amazonia always leaves up to the visitors which activities they enjoy and find the most enriching.

Day 7: Manaus

In the case of one to three persons, you will have an early departure by speedboat and arrive in Novo Airao and transfer to Manaus.

Note: Activities can be changed / switched with a previous agreement (plus Visit Amazonia has a native guide that can suggest variations according to each one’s preference).

This wildlife tour will be located in Xixuau Reserve, Brazil. The Xixuau Reserve is one of the most intact and wildlife-rich places in the Brazilian Amazon. It is situated 500 kilometers north-west of Manaus. The Xixuau is unique in the transparency of its waters, making it the number one location for underwater filming in the Amazon, and hosts researchers, photographers, and filmmakers from all over the world.

It is where 90% of the visitors come to, and it is considered one of the best destinations in the Brazilian Amazon for seeing wildlife. Giant otters, both species of river dolphins, sloths, anteaters, river dolphins, many species of monkeys, snakes, and a vast array of aquatic fauna can be seen here.
