Day 1: Kampala - Bwindi Gorilla Park

After breakfast, your driver will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will stop at the Equator for pictures and lunch in Mbarara town. The journey takes you through the scenic country sides of western Uganda, via the beautifully placed Kigezi Highlands with nice terraces. You will know why the place is called ‘the Switzerland of Africa’.

You will arrive late in the evening and have the chance to relax as you wait for dinner and overnight at Golden Monkey Guest House.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After early breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters for briefing with packed lunch, and later set off along the tracks in the thick forest to go search for the great Mountain Gorillas. Depending on the movement of these humble giants the walk might take between 2-9 hours before you encounter the gorillas. The walk can be a bit tiresome, however, meeting these great apes and spending some time with them while looking deep into their expressive brown eyes, is an exhilarating and heart breaking wildlife encounter that Africa has to offer.

Time permitting, you can take a nature walk to nearby communities. Dinner and overnight will be at Golden Monkey Guest House.

Day 3: Return trip to Kampala

In the morning you will have breakfast and then pack your luggage to start on the journey back to Kampala / Kigali.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

“Bwindi” is the word for “impenetrable” in the local dialect. It is the name of a verdant forest to be found on part of the great ridges and escarpment of the East African Albertine Rift Valley. It is a combination of ancient equatorial rainforest and a unique geomorphology of varying altitude.

It is not just a beauty to behold and a challenge to penetrate, but also home to rare primates, birds and other fauna. Half of the world’s only remaining mountain gorillas live here and their presence has made this forest one of the world’s most popular destinations among those who love primates and ‘intact’ nature.

It is difficult to believe the gentleness of these giant cousins as you gaze at each other at close range and go on a journey into the ancient past; back to a time when the primates used to share their habitat with man. The encounter has been described as one of the most exciting and breathtaking adventures that the African jungle has to offer.

The park has 90 other mammal species, including 11 primates, monkey tribes, mangabeys, pottos and night jars. The forest also offers a unique birding opportunity with 23 rare and highly localised Albertine species endemic to this forest alone. You may visit any time of the year although during the rainy season the treks are a tougher challenge.
