Gorilla tracking rules

Before departure for gorilla tracking

  • A maximum eight visitors may visit in a group of habituated mountain gorillas on a daily basis. It will lead to minimum behavioral disturbances to the gorillas and lessen the chances of their exposure to human borne diseases.
  • You should wash your hands always before heading over to tracking gorillas.

Along the way of gorilla tracking tour

  • You should keep the level of your voice as low as possible. On your gorilla tracking safari, you will get to see the greatest concentrations of bird species and other wildlife along the forest.
  • You should not leave any rubbish thing while going on a tracking safari in Uganda. This means whatever things or accessories you bring for your gorilla tracking trip should be carried out back with you.
  • You will be taken to the sites where the tour guides seen the gorillas the day before. From right there, you will follow the trail of gorillas to search them. Even, you will be able to look out for the nestling sites of gorillas along the way.
  • When you will approach to the mountain gorillas, the tour guides will inform you to get ready.

When you are nearer to the gorillas

  • At least seven meters (21 feet) of distance should be maintained to observe the gorillas at all times. The more distance you will be, the more relaxed your group will be.
  • You need to stay tight to your groups when you are up close with the gorillas.
  • You should keep down your voice. Remember that it is okay to ask questions to the tour guides.
  • You shouldn’t smoke, eat, or drink when you are nearer to the gorillas as eating or drinking near to them will increase the chances of food or drink morsels or droplets falling which will cause the risk of disease transmission.
  • Oftentimes, the gorillas charge. You should follow the guides. For instance, crouch down slowly, don’t look at the gorillas directly on to their eyes, and always wait for the animals to pass. You shouldn’t make an attempt to run away because that will increase the risk factor.
  • Flash photography is not allowed. When taking photographs, you should move slowly and carefully.
  • Don’t ever try to touch gorillas as they are wild in nature.
  • The maximum time you will get to spend with gorillas is one hour. If the gorillas become nervous or agitated, the tour guide will finish your gorilla tracking tour early.
