Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi

Jambo - Karibu! Twiga Tours representatives will warmly meet you upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) or at your Nairobi hotel with the traditional, unique, and special welcome (bubbly, wet towels, and presentation of authentic safari hat and a beautiful authentic canvas pouch filled with safari essentials). You will proceed to Samburu.

You'll arrive at the intimate 12-tent Elephant Bedroom Camp to a warm welcome, then lunch. You'll enjoy an afternoon game viewing drive. The Samburu region is the best place to find several endemic northern species; including the gerenuk (Twiga gazelle) that has a long neck, the beisa oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, and Grevy’s zebra.

Samburu is also an ornithological paradise, home to many birds including local species such as the Palm Nut Vulture and the Vivacious Dove. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.

  • Stay at: Elephant Bedroom Camp

Day 2: Samburu National Reserve

Enjoy morning and afternoon game viewings in both Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Leopards are often seen at dusk. The Samburu culture is a truly fascinating one, sharing a great deal of ancestral and linguistic ties to the Maasai.

The entire Samburu region is a place of breath-taking and magical beauty, a place where the vision of a deep red sunset silhouetting the doum palms along the river as a leopard emerges to hunt brings the perfect end to a day on safari. Enjoy meals and an overnight stay at the camp.

  • Stay at: Elephant Bedroom Camp

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve - Lake Nakuru National Park

This morning after breakfast, you'll drive to Lake Nakuru National Park with a brief stop at the Thomson's Falls for a breathtaking view of the great scenery. You'll arrive at the lodge to a very warm welcome, check in, then lunch.

This afternoon, enjoy a nature walk led by the camp’s naturalist. As the night falls, led by a professional and experienced night game spotter, you'll depart for a night game viewing drive. It cannot get more exciting than this! The thrill is beyond human explanation.

This is an opportunity to see some of the nocturnal animals that you may not see during the day, as you enjoy the sweet cricket melodies and watch the stars twinkle in their splendor. What about spotting an aardvark! An African myth goes that if one spots this rare animal at night, he is so lucky and may live for over 100 years! This might be your night! You'll return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Stay at: Mbweha Camp

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

This morning, you'll enjoy your breakfast then depart for a full day of game viewing. You will enjoy hot lunch at the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. Some of the interesting places to visit include the baboon cliff, the lion hill, and the Mau Escarpment.

The park is one of the best game viewing parks with various animal species including a pride of lions, Cape buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, the endangered Rothschild's giraffes, the black and white rhinos, the Burchell’s zebras, impalas, and the elusive leopards among many others.

Over 300 bird species have been recorded here too. Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the best places to see the endangered black and white rhinos. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge.

  • Stay at: Mbweha Camp

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park - Maasai Mara National Reserve

You'll have a hearty early morning breakfast, then drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, offering wonderful scenery and plenty of game. You'll arrive at the intimate 20-tent Tipilikwani Mara Camp to a very warm welcome for lunch. This afternoon is the moment you have been longing for - you'll depart on an exciting game viewing drive.

The rolling plains and grasslands, stretching far into the horizons as far as the eye can see is home to the black-manned lion, the savannah elephant, the Cape buffalo, wildebeest, the elusive leopard, cheetah, the spotted amd striped hyena, the rhino, topi, Burchelle’s zebra, the Maasai giraffe among many others.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is one that can never disappoint. One is spoilt by the variety of bird and wildlife species in this game reserve. For a long time, Maasai Mara National Reserve has stubbed her authority as the ‘granary’ of wildlife in Kenya. You'll return back to the camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Stay at: Tipilikwani Mara Camp

Day 6: Maasai Mara National Reserve

Enjoy breakfast, then proceed on a full day of game viewing drives and adventure. Be on the lookout for the Big Five that Maasai Mara is famous for. These include the lion, savannah (African) elephant, the Cape buffalo, the leopard, and the black rhino. You may even be so lucky to witness a leopard or a cheetah sprint and make a kill! You'll return back to the camp for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Stay at: Tipilikwani Mara Camp

Day 7: Maasai Mara National Reserve - Nairobi

This morning, you'll enjoy your breakfast then check out. Unbelievable but true, your good bush moments have come to an end. You'll bid farewell to the wonderful lodge manager and his team then drive back to Nairobi. Not empty handed, though.

You will bring photographs - a capture of the special moments you have had on this tour to immortalize the experience. Your guide driver will meet you at the Wilson Airport (WIL); transfer you to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) for your onward flight.

Things to do (optional)

Ballon safari adventure

You can experience a balloon safari adventure which begins just before dawn. Flames from the hot air balloon burners light the darkness as the crews inflate their craft. The first, pink tongues of sunlight flicker across the skies and the hot air balloon fills then rises.

Suspended in a basket beneath the rainbow-coloured canopy, you're off for a game viewing adventure with an entirely different perspective. Apart from the occasional hiss of the burners, a lion's roar, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched in the tips of the trees startled and screeching to see something above them, the flight above the open plains is magically silent.

The thing that amazes most first-time balloonists is the absolute stillness, the silence as you float above the plains, the forest and the rivers of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. And if you've flown elsewhere, you've seen nothing like this.

At the end of the flight, the passengers are treated to a champagne breakfast in the bush, complete with flowers, bone china, and crystal are set out on the table that is placed under a convenient acacia tree.

The finishing touch to the flight is a game drive back to the lodge or camp, and the possibility of seeing the same pride of lions, or herd of elephants that had been viewed while ballooning.

Other activity

You can enjoy an optional visit to Samburu Manyatta to see how the tribe lives on day 2.
