Location

This safari will take place in Maasai Mara National Reserve and Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya and in Hell's Gate National Park, Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Lake Manyara in Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best-known game viewing areas and is Tanzania’s most visited. It is about 20 kilometers wide and it is also one of the largest collapsed volcanoes in the world. In the crater, you may find a variety of animals and vegetation including grasslands, swamps, forests, salt pans, and a freshwater lake.

You are likely to see lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, and many of the plains herbivores such as the wildebeest, the Thomson’s gazelle, zebras, and the reedbucks, as well as thousands of flamingos wading in the shallows of Lake Magadi - the soda lake at the crater’s base.

Despite its steep walls, there’s a considerable amount of movement of wildlife in and out of the crater - mostly to the Serengeti, since the land between the crater and Lake Manyara is intensively farmed. Ngorongoro Crater remains a favored spot for wildlife because there is a permanent water supply and grassland on the crater floor.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is the largest national park in Serengeti empire, Tanzania. It is the second most famous after the seventh wonders of the world, Maasai Mara, home of culture and beautiful events. Serengeti is also most famous for its annual migration of over one million and a half white bearded (or brindled) wildebeest and 400,000 zebras.

This had been the grazing ground of the Maasai people, grazing their livestock in the open plains known to them as “endless plain” for over 300 years when the first European explorers visited the area.

The park covers 14,763 square kilometers (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savanna, as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzanian and Kenyan border, where it is continuous with the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

To the south-east of the park lays the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to the south-west lies Maswa Game Reserve, on the western borders are Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves, and to the north-east lies Loliondo Game Control Area.

The park is usually described as divided into three regions. The endless, almost treeless grassland of the south is the most emblematic scenery of the park. This is where the wildebeest breed, as they remain in the plains from December to May.

Other hoofed animals, zebras, gazelles, impalas, hartebeests, topis, buffaloes, and waterbucks occur in huge numbers during the wet season. Kopjes are granite florations which are very common in the region and they are great observation posts for predators, as well as a refuge for hyraxs and pythons.

Tarangire National Park

Located slightly off the main safari route, Tarangire National Park is a lovely, quiet park in Northern Tanzania. It is most famous for its elephants migration, birding, and authentic safari atmosphere. The majority of travelers to the region either miss out Tarangire altogether or venture into the park for a matter of hours - leaving swathes of Tarangire virtually untouched.

With a game viewing area that is roughly ten times the size of nearby Lake Manyara National Park and a concentration of game that is exceptional from July through October, this seasonal Tanzania safari park is a little gem on the northern safari circuit, especially if you love elephants.

Tarangire is the surprise package on the northern circuit. Often overshadowed by the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire has huge concentrations of animals in the peak months and a fraction of the visitor numbers of any of the other northern parks.
