Program

Day 1: Entebbe - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

After breakfast, you will leave Entebbe and drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to the mountain gorillas. You will drive along Masaka highway for at least four hours to get to the equator. This will be your first stop to stretch and experience the two hemispheres that split the earth. At the equator, there will be performances by locals to show the Coriolis Effect which happens when water is placed in a basin on the equator. This experience is not to be missed. You will also take photos on either side of the world.

After a snack, you continue to Mbarara where you will again stop over for lunch at the Igongo Cultural Center which has also been converted into a museum. Igongo Cultural Centre and Country Hotel is a leading recreational complex comprising of the captivating and one of the best museums in Uganda, Eriijukiro (the museum of South Western Uganda), a traditional restaurant, bar, luxurious and spacious five-star hotel located exactly 12 kilometers along the scenic Mbarara Masaka highway. It is the ultimate destination for lovers of history, art, culture, and comfort.

A staple of ultimate African luxury, Igongo merges comfort, relaxation, and recreation in an environment offering gorgeous scenery and beautiful gardens that capture the imaginations of both the young and the old. The complex is an attraction to a diversity of people and cultures both local and international. After lunch, you continue to Bwindi via Kabale, referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa”. You’ll arrive at the lodge in the evening and overnight there.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

You are up relatively early for a hearty breakfast to give you the energy needed for your gorilla trek. Before 08:00, you report to the ranger station for registration and a talk by one of the rangers; the guides will then take you through the bush pushing your way through the undergrowth, parting thick creepers, to track the gorillas. The trek can take from half an hour to seven hours, a reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes.

Once you are close to the group, the guides will ask you to leave behind your bags as no food items should be carried close to the gorillas. Just take your cameras with you as you are about to meet the gentle giants! Sit in the forest amongst the gorillas, listening to them grumble to each other, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male; the silverback. It is an extraordinary feeling sitting in the dense rainforest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining mountain gorillas, sadly enough there are only about 650 of these beautiful creatures left. You are allowed exactly one hour with the gorillas before returning to the base station.

In the afternoon, you can choose to relax at the lodge or engage in optional activities like the Batwa community experience and Buniga forest walk. Overnight is at the lodge.

Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park - Entebbe

After your breakfast, your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Entebbe or drive you to the airport to catch your flight back home.

Included excursions

During this program, you will also get to visit South Western Uganda Museum.

Location

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) is in south-western Uganda. The park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and is situated along the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border next to the Virunga National Park and on the edge of the Albertine Rift. Composed of 331 square kilometers (128 square miles) of both montane and lowland forest, it is accessible only on foot. BINP is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-designated World Heritage Site.

Species diversity is a feature of the park. It provides habitat for 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, and many endangered species. Floristically, the park is among the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 flowering plant species, including 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. In particular, the area shares in the high levels of endemism of the Albertine Rift. The park is a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, and many birds such as hornbills and turacos. It is most notable for the 340 Bwindi gorillas, half of the world's population of the critically endangered mountain gorillas.
