Unleash your inner adventurous feeling by joining a mokoro safari in Okavango Delta, Botswana with The Old Bridge. Dug-out canoe or mokoro trips have become the popular way for travellers to experience the tranquility of the Okavango Delta. This trip is a good way to slip quietly into, and become part of, an every-day life in this watery wonderland. Come and pursue your wanderlust here in Botswana!
During this safari, you will be accommodated in a riverside campsite.
The Old Bridge runs all its mokoro trails through the “Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust” who set the guide and community fees for activities. The members of this community traditionally use this area of the delta for fishing, reed cutting, and the harvesting of water lily bulbs. The mokoro is an integral part of these activities.
A motorboat transfer (during times of high water) or a safari 4 × 4 transfer (during times of low water) both take approximately one hour from Maun. These will start and end your trip. They will take you out by 08:00 and get you back by 17:00.
Your days will be spent with your guide gliding silently down waterways, chilling in the camp during the mid-day heat, and taking early morning as well as late afternoon game viewing walks. Your evenings are spent in island camp sites sitting at the fire-side immersed in the sounds of wild African nights.
You will take a 1-hour motorboat or 4 × 4 ride (depending on water levels) from “The Bridge” to the community-run mokoro station departing around 08:15. You will arrive at the Mokoro station around 09:15. You will meet your mokoro guides / polers and load all luggage and equipment into the mekoro. You will spend 3 hours on a mokoro gliding to your campsite. Once you arrive at your riverside campsite, you will have lunch followed by an hour or two of relaxation. Your guide will then take you for a 2 - 3-hour late afternoon game walk. After you arrive back to the camp, you can have a shower (bucket shower hoisted into a tree) and enjoy your campfire dinner. Spend the evening around the campfire enjoying interaction with your guides and listening to their stories.
Today, you will wake up early around 05:30 for coffee / tea, cereal, and rusks. Then, you will depart for a 4-hour early morning game walk. You will return at around 10:00 for a hearty brunch. Later, you can relax in the camp or ask your guides to take you for a swim. In the mid-afternoon, you will go for a 3-hour mokoro trip or game walk. You will arrive back in the camp just before sunset. You can have a shower and enjoy your campfire dinner.
Today, you will also wake up early around 05:30 for coffee / tea, cereal, and rusks. Later, you will depart for another 4-hour early morning game walk. Afterward, you will return at around 10:00 for a hearty brunch. Then, you can relax in the camp or ask your guides to take you for another swimming session. You will return to mokoro station for a motorboat pick up at 16:00 and return back to “The Bridge” at 17:00.
This safari will take place at Okavango Delta, Botswana.
