This safari includes 13 nights' accommodation. The accommodation on this tour is simple in style, with 12 nights' accommodation in twin shared en-suite chalets and casitas (reed chalets), and 1 night in Bilene has a variety of en-suite rooms and 2 bedrooms sharing a bathroom in a casita, so you may have an en-suite room throughout the tour. The guides will sort out room allocations.
Departing from Johannesburg at 06:30, you will travel through the rolling plains of the Highveld before descending the escarpment into the heart of KwaZulu-Natal where you will stay in Mkuze Game Reserve. The reserve was established in 1912 and has a large diversity of natural habitats. This diversity of habitat means plentiful game and abundant bird life.
Mkuze Game Reserve is part of the Greater iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a world heritage site. You will explore the reserve on game drives and visit a hide overlooking one of the waterholes to watch the game come down to drink. Mkuze Game Reserve plays a key role in the preservation of the endangered black and white rhino.
You will visit Kosi Bay Nature Reserve which covers a region of fertile estuaries, mangroves, dune forest and tidal lakes. You will explore this amazing eco-system on foot and also snorkel at the estuary mouth. A special feature of the Kosi Bay estuary is the traditional practice of subsistence tidal trap fishing.
A local guide will lead you on a walk in the neighboring village where you meet local Zulu people. You will be introduced to their culture and customs. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night in November to January, and an excursion can be arranged to view this beautiful natural occurrence (at an additional cost).
Hlane Royal Game Reserve is Swaziland’s largest national park. The chalet where you will be staying in is surrounded by beautiful African bushveld, dominated by knobthorn, leadwood and tamboti trees. In front of the camp, there is a waterhole where rhino and other wildlife come to drink. You will join a local ranger on a bushwalk, practice your game tracking skills and see fantastic bird life.
You enter Mozambique at the Namaacha border post and travel to Maputo, formerly known as Lourenço Marques. Situated on a natural harbor, Maputo is the economic hub of Mozambique. Once referred to as the “African Riviera”, Portuguese and African cultures meet in an exquisite blend of seafood and vibrant life. Taste the excellent seafood cuisine in a local restaurant (on your own expense).
Traveling north along the Indian Ocean coastline, you will drive through mango and cashew nut plantations enroute to the town of Inhambane. Explore Inhambane and its 200-year-old cathedral and visit the enchanting fresh produce market before moving to Praia de Tofu. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the warm sea and expansive white beaches. There you can find many optional activities such as dhow rides, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and surfing (at an additional cost).
You will turn south along the coast to the town of Bilene which is situated on the shores of the crystal clear Uembje lagoon. The lagoon is 8 kilometers wide and 27 kilometers long with white, sandy beaches, and is separated from the Indian Ocean by a narrow strip of sand dunes. You will spend the afternoon exploring the lagoon with options of kayaking and snorkeling (at an additional cost), and swimming in the shallow, calm waters. You can have your dinner served at a local restaurant overlooking the lagoon (on your own expense).
Leaving the Indian Ocean coast, you will travel through the Limpopo Transfrontier Park and enter Kruger National Park. You will enjoy exciting game drives in The Karell Travel’s safari vehicle. There, you are likely to spot lions, giraffes, and the mighty elephant among many others. Relax in the tranquil bush as you experience a true African wilderness.
You will stay in a lodge resort in Knysna which is nestled on a tranquil lagoon, for two nights. You will take a day trip to the Storms River mouth, where there are walks up the gorge along the rocky coast. The Tsitsikamma National Park incorporates 80 kilometers of spectacular sea and landscapes. It is a remote mountainous region with secluded valleys and coastal forests with deep river.
After an early morning game drive, you will return to Johannesburg in the evening, sun-tanned, laid-back, and ready to rejoin life. Your breakfast will be served before your departure. Tour ends at approximately 18:00 at the hotel.
This safari will take place in South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland. 13 breakfasts, 13 lunches, and 10 dinners will be provided by your guides. The meals will be prepared either at the truck or in the self catering kitchen. You can eat your meals either under the trees near your chalet or around the campfire at the truck.
