This exciting African safari will take you to one of Namibia's main tourist attractions, Etosha National Park. This particular tour is one of the most time effective ways to view up close the wildlife and enjoy the magnificent landscape of the park. Measuring over 22,000 square kilometers, it is home to 114 species of mammals and 340 species of bird life. Etosha is one of Africa's largest and most impressive game parks.
The maximum participants in the group is 14.
You will stay in a canvas dome type tent which is easy to assemble. The mattress provided is approximately five centimeters thick with mattress cover. You will be provided a camp chair with backrest.
You will be picked up from your Windhoek accommodation between 08:00 and 08:30. You will be driven north for 550 kilometers, passing through farmland, with refreshment stops at small towns along the way. Arrival time at Etosha National Park is in the mid-afternoon. Out of a number of descriptions of the name Etosha over the years, one description is "The Place of Emptiness," referring to the vast saltpan.
On entering the park, you will have a game drive through to the Okaukuejo Camp. After checking in at reception, your overnight camp will be set up. Okaukuejo is famous for its waterhole described as "one of the best game viewing opportunities in Southern Africa." An original meaning of Okaukuejo is "the woman who has a child every year," or a prolific woman.
After the evening meal, the opportunities to view some of Etosha's big game continue at the floodlit waterhole conveniently situated on the boundary of the camp and easily reachable on foot. Black rhino, elephant, lion, and numerous species of antelope are frequent visitors.
You will have a full day of game driving at the dwarf shrub Salsosa savannah around Okaukuejo, skirting along the rim of the pan visiting a wide selection of waterholes en-route. The game viewing is usually excellent and plains game such as zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, springbok, impala, and eland can be found in large numbers. Be on the look-out with your cameras and binoculars.
Unusual herds of 50 elephants or more often walk right down the middle of the road, offering excellent photographic opportunities. There is a scheduled stop at Halali Camp for a leisurely lunch and time to visit the waterhole and cool off from the hot, afternoon sun in the pool.
Refreshments can be purchased at the bar before the journey continues to the eastern side of the park and to the overnight stop at Namutoni Camp. The second leg of the journey also offers great game viewing along the waterholes in and around Etosha Pan.
You will have a long drive back to Windhoek before one last game drive on the way out of the park. The return journey will be on the main roads passing through towns and rural areas en-route with a final stop in the small town of Okahandja, the home of Namibia's largest woodcarvers market.
The stalls, which are operated on a local co-operative basis, are one of the best places to shop for truly Namibian souvenirs and curios. Arrival time in Windhoek is scheduled for 16:00 at your accommodation in the capital city.
