Only 2.5 to 3 hours from Johannesburg in the North West Province lies the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. As a transitional zone between the arid dryness of the Kalahari and the wet Lowveld vegetation, the Pilanesberg encompasses grassy plains, rocky outcrops, wooded valleys, and some breathtaking dams.

It’s unique placement in a volcanic crater created over 12 million years ago from overflowing magma and as a transitional zone, means that it is home to virtually all of the animal species native to Southern Africa, including the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo), wild dog, tsessebe, and more than 360 species of birds.

Because of its relatively small size and because of its ecological richness, guests have an increased chance of experiencing the Big Five in their natural habitat.
