The accommodation type in Africa varies from hotels and inns to luxury lodges and tented camps. Advanced bookings are recommended. In Kenya, most safari lodges have a luxurious type of accommodations, with a lounge, central dining, and bar in single unit hotels. Tented accommodations vary from super deluxe to standard tents.
In Tanzania, lodges tend to be of rondavel or banda type with a lounge, central dining, and bar in single unit hotels. Luxurious tented camps pitched on concrete bases are popular. National parks also offer ordinary campsites. All major towns have luxury hotels and good guesthouses.
This morning, you depart by road through the scenic Athi Plains and into the bush country of Amboseli nestled in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. You arrive in time for lunch and check - in at Ol Tukai Lodge. The lodge offers a panoramic landscape sky and wildlife with the massive majesty of snowcapped Kili in the distance. The lodge is camouflaged in a forest of fever trees and palms.
Amboseli is a big game country, elephants, antelope, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and giraffe. Two game drives are planned today; both will introduce you to the intense beauty and drama that fills each day. Predators stalk the herds grazing animals recreating the age-old drama of life and death under the African sun in a setting so lushly beautiful for photography.
You will depart early from Amboseli after breakfast and drive north with a brief stop for lunch at Blue post Hotel in Thika. You will then proceed north, drive through lush tea, coffee, and pineapple plantation to the Aberdare Country Club for check in and then transfer to the Ark Forest Lodge for overnight.
Situated in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountain Range, the Ark has three level balconies that overlook a salt lick and a waterhole where you will enjoy the very finest high altitude game viewing and close photo opportunities. Dinner and overnight will be at the Ark Forest Lodge.
After breakfast at the Ark, you will be transferred to the Aberdare Country Club and join your driver. You drive north through the quaint town of Isiolo. Here in Samburu / Shaba National Reserve, you will see wildlife not found in the southern hemisphere such as Somali ostrich, Grevy zebra, the reticulated giraffe, and the gerenuk.
You will check in and lunch at Sarova Shaba Lodge. An afternoon game drive has been planned. You will spend the night along the banks of the beautiful Uaso - Nyiro River at the luxurious Sarova Shaba Lodge.
Further explorations of this fascinating reserve await you, a full day game drive is planned today as you travel and take pictures of the world’s most spectacular and exciting terrain. This was also the home, for instance, of Elsa the Lioness of “Born free fame”.
Your destination today is the exotic Sweetwater’s Tented Camp in the secluded heart of Ol Pejeta. In Ranch and Rhino reserve, these magnificent beasts are given sanctuary from those who would take their lives to sell their horns.
Here too, Jane Godall Institute operates a remarkable Chimpanzee sanctuary where you meet primates face to face. Your tents at Sweetwater’s will remind you of this bygone era. The tents overlook one of the busiest waterholes, with elephants, giraffes and a plethora of plain game visiting.
Lake Nakuru is your destination today, with its jewel of a National park, well known for hundreds of thousands of flamingoes, a leopard sighting is likely here. This is a photographers’ paradise. Lake Nakuru National park is also a rhino’s sanctuary both black and white. It is also a refuge for the endangered Rothschild giraffe. Dinner and overnight will be at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge.
After breakfast and check out, you drive to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The richness of the park’s wildlife will captivate you for the next three days while your luxurious tented camp overlooking the Talek River at the very confluence of Mara’s four prime game viewing area will be equally exciting. Dinner and overnight will be at Mara Intrepids Camp.
The next two days, you explore the Mara extensively. A country of rolling grasslands, dense thickets, and groves of acacia woodland. The Mara is home to the incredible variety of wildlife. A deep forest grows along its tributaries where many hippos and crocodiles bask lazily in the sunlight. Here, you find the largest population of lions in Africa. This is also home of the Maasai people, the Maasai is enduring to guard his cattle and proud figure in the Mara. Dinner and overnight will be at Mara Intrepids Camp.
After early breakfast and check in, you drive to Serengeti in Tanzania. You will have lunch at the border after clearing customs and immigration. There is a game drive en route to Serengeti Sopa Lodge and you will be arriving late in the evening. Dinner and overnight will be at Serengeti Sopa Lodge. You spend the two nights at the lodge with full-day game drives.
There are millions or more large mammals, elephants, cheetahs, gazelles, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes etc. that inhabit this great grassland, shrubs and riverine forests. The lodge is styled after a traditional Maasai village blending in with the sun-bleached colors of Serengeti. Dinner and overnight will be at Serengeti Sopa Lodge.
After a hearty breakfast, you are off to the Ngorongoro Conservation area for two nights. En route, you will visit Olduvai Gorge where the Leakey family uncovered the fossil of Homo – habilis (handyman), the first tool user who lived 1.75 million years ago, irrevocably changing the way scientists view human evolution.
You continue to your lodge for a sumptuous lunch. Afternoon at leisure, it is time to take pictures of the caldera and luminous sunsets from your guest suites. The lodge is an architectural marvel built on the rim of the undisturbed eastern side of the crater. Dinner and overnight will be at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.
This morning, you descend into the crater and spend the whole day with picnic lunch tracking animals. This magnificent natural Amphitheatre is said to have the largest concentration of animals in the whole of Africa, including a high density of hyenas and lions.
Large flocks of flamingoes inhabit the alkaline lake. Because of the short grass, the game is easily spotted and photography is excellent. The ever-changing mood and tenor of the great amphitheater will hold your attention every second of the day. Dinner and overnight will be at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.
After breakfast and check out, you drive leisurely to Lake Manyara Serena Lodge for lunch, located on a spectacular setting at the edge of the escarpment, overlooking the Great Rift Valley. From the lodge, you can have a clear view of stunning Manyara Soda Lake with its masses of pink flamingos.
After lunch, a game drive is planned to visit this lovely forested gem of a game park. In this lush landscape, there are large herds of elephants, a troop of baboons, vervets and blue monkeys, as well as leopards, big cats, and plain game. On your game run, you also seek the famous tree climbing lions, a sight you will definitely never forget.
Your final day! After breakfast and check out of Lake Manyara Serena Lodge, you drive to Arusha town. You will have a little tour of the town and shopping before transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flights home. Tired but exalted on day 16 of this mighty photographic safari!

Kenya is renown for its wonderful gastronomy and array of exotic and international cuisine. Keep to established hotels and restaurants for meals. Drinking water from the tap is considered risky. Hotels and lodges usually furnish safe water in a thermos flask in guest rooms. Bottled mineral water is available in every hotel and supermarket. While in Tanzania, it is advisable to drink boiled or bottled water. If camping, you can bring drinking water and other bottled drinks.
Special dietary requirements are catered for throughout Africa. Please give Soin Africa Safaris advanced notice so that they can make arrangements with the lodges and camps you are scheduled to stay at. Most restaurants offer selections for vegetarians, depending on their forte. Local specialties can be surprisingly good! With the exception of a few lodges, halaal and kosher food is not available at most camps / lodges.
