Join Selous Explorer and travel to some of the most remarkable yet less-visited national parks in Tanzania! In this trip, you will explore the Southern Circuit, a little more away from the beaten tracks, where it is possible to discover the various and untouched landscapes of Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. This is definitely a tour not to be missed!
You will stay here on the first night of your safari. Featuring free Wi-Fi, Tan-Swiss Lodge is set in Mikumi, 17 kilometers from the main gate of Mikumi National Park. All rooms have air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom with shower. Some units feature a seating area and/or a terrace. The lodge also includes a year-round outdoor pool, and guests can enjoy its restaurant. Free private parking is available on site as well.
You will spend your second and third night here.
On your fourth night, you will stay at the Arc Hotel, a modern international-level hotel, located on the outskirts of the city of Morogoro, approximately two kilometers from the city center, close to the main road to Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, or Zambia.
The hotel offers comfortable double or single rooms and suites to meet the needs of both professionals and vacationers. All rooms on the first floor have access to a private balcony looking out on the Eastern Arc (Uluguru) Mountains.
This will be your home on the last two nights of the safari. Hippo Camp is situated on the banks of the Great Rufiji River on the edge of the Selous Game Reserve.
In the morning, you will be picked up from the hotel, airport, or ferry terminal and driven to Mikumi National Park, which is approximately a five-hour drive from Dar es Salaam. On arrival, you go for an afternoon game drive in Mikumi National Park, with overnight at Tan-Swiss Lodge on a full-board basis.
After breakfast drive to Ruaha National Park, with a stopover in Iringa for lunch. After lunch, proceed to Ruaha National Park. On arrival, you will start with game viewing en route to Ruaha Tanapa Cottages for overnight on a full-board basis.
After breakfast, you will go for a full-day game drive in Ruaha National Park with packed lunch. Enjoy your lunch on one of picnic sites that your guide will choose. Dinner and overnight will be inside the park at Ruaha Tanapa Cottages on a full-board basis.
Have an early-morning game drive and return to the camp for late breakfast. After breakfast, drive to Morogoro city where you will spend the night. Dinner and overnight will be at Arc Hotel on a full-board basis.
After breakfast, drive to Selous Game Reserve with a packed lunch. On arrival, you will start with a game drive en route to the southern part of the reserve. Dinner and overnight will be at Hippo Tented Camp on a full-board basis.
After breakfast, you will go for another game drive in Selous Game Reserve and return to the camp for a hot lunch. After lunch, relax on the bank of Rufiji River before the boat cruise on the mighty river. Dinner and overnight will be at Hippo Tented Camp on a full-board basis.
Enjoy an early-morning walking safari and return to the camp for a late breakfast. After breakfast, you will drive back to Dar es Salaam. On arrival in Dar es Salaam, you will be dropped at the ferry terminal for the last ferry to Zanzibar, which leaves at 3:45 p.m., or at the airport for your flight back home or at another destination.
On the sixth day of this safari, you will have a boat cruise along Rufiji River.

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth largest national park and the most accessible from Dar es Salaam. Within its 3230 square kilometers, it is set between the Uluguru Mountains to the north and the Lumango Mountains to the southeast. Mikumi hosts buffaloes, giraffes, elephants, lions, pythons, zebras, leopards crocodiles, and many more.
Tanzania’s largest park, Ruaha National Park covers an area of 20,000 square kilometers and a vast and magnificent wilderness area. It is the home of the largest population of elephants, as well as larger herds of buffaloes, prides of lions, leopards, giraffes, kudus, Grant’s gazelles, wild dogs, ostriches, roan and sable antelopes, and more than 400 different bird species. The great Ruaha River flows through the eastern side of the park and is the home of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds.
Approximately 55,000 square kilometers, Selous Game Reserve covers 5% of Tanzania's total land area. It is Africa’s largest wildlife reserve and Tanzania’s most extensive protected area. It provides shelter for large numbers of elephants, big populations of buffaloes, wild dogs, lions, crocodiles, and hippos. It also has a rich variety of birdlife and some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos. The reserve is named after the one of the famous British Frederick Courtney Selous who was killed in the reserve during WWI.
You will be provided full-board meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as bottled water throughout the safari.
Please book your flight to arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Selous Explorer will pick you up from the airport.
