This six-day Etosha, Swakopmund, and Sossusvlei Camping Safari will show you the best of wildlife, landscape, and the oldest desert in Africa. It is one of the best tours for a newcomer to explore Namibia’s three most visited destinations.
In an otherwise flat area, Halali Campsite is perched between a few hills and koppies. Thicker vegetation makes this popular with leopard, rhino, and elephant.
Situated halfway between Namutoni and Okaukuejo, the Halali Campsite is centrally located in close proximity of some of the most popular waterholes of the Etosha National Park. A short walk will take you to the camp’s floodlit waterhole, with excellent day and night game viewing.
‘Halali’ is the German word for the traditional ending of a hunt. The campsite signifies the end of game hunting and the rise of eco tourism in Namibia. Halali offers active guests the largest pool in the park, and its strategic location between Namutoni and Okaukuejo makes it a great stopover for lunch, ice cream, a cool drink, or just petrol.
Recently upgraded and under new management, the campsite has a large communal lawn area, braai areas, hot showers, and wash up areas. Located at the Swakopmund River Mouth, mere meters from the beach, Tiger Reef is a neat campsite with lovely private sites and sprawling communal lawn.
At the entry to Sossusvlei is Sesriem Canyon, At the foot of the gorge, which plunges down to 30 to 40 m, are pools that become replenished after good rains.
Located perfectly at the entry to Sossusvlei inside the park gate is Sesriem Camping, right beside the gate into the desert and just a short drive from Sesriem Canyon, where centuries of erosion have incised a narrow gorge about one kilometer in length.
It is perfect for campers who want to experience the beauty of the Namib Desert, with the sun setting over the Elim dune, then the stars emerging until they fill the sky above. You'll also hear the clicking of the desert, barking of the geckos, and the distant howl of the jackal. Sit by the fire and imagine what you will.
Sesriem derives its name from the time when earlier pioneers tied six lengths of rawhide thongs (riem) together to draw water from the pools. Accommodation at Sesriem is provided in 24 campsites. Facilities found there include a gas station, convenience store, and a secure parking area.
You will depart to Etosha National Park and stay two nights at Halali Campsite. The park’s main characteristic is a salt pan so large that it can be seen from space. Yet, there is abundant wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving you almost guaranteed game sightings.
At the same time, Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and Southern Africa, since the concentration of big games around the waterholes makes game viewing incredibly rewarding. You might not even have to leave your rest camp to see lions, elephants, rhino, and any number of antelope and zebra quenching their thirst
After breakfast at the lodge, clients will go out on a full day of safari game viewing, allowing plenty of opportunities for good sightings and spectacular photographs.
On this morning, you will leave and make your way to the cooler coastal town of Swakopmund by the Atlantic Ocean. This town resembles a small German town, with its architectural buildings, palm-lined streets, seaside promenades, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and museums.
You will depart to Sossusvlei and stay two nights at Sesriem Campsite. You'll go see the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei and in the afternoon, you will reach your lodge, wherein you will enjoy your dinner.
After a good night's rest, you will wake up early (one hour before sunrise) and have breakfast before going into the park for a Sossuvlei excursion, which includes Dune 45, Deadvlei, Hiddenvlei, and Big Daddy. There, you can climb a sand dune and watch the colors change as the sun rises over the horizon, slipping its morning warmth over the Namib desert dunes.
The tour will have regular stops to let clients take pictures and have some exposure of the dunes.
After breakfast, the guest will be on their way back to Windhoek.
This safari combines the wildlife of Etosha National Park by which guests will have game drives to see animals like elephants, hippo, giraffe, and lions.
In Swakopmund, you will have two activities (Quad biking and sandboarding) to mention a few options. After that, you will be departing to Sossusvlei to end the tour with a desert excursion, which will include Deadvlei, Big Daddy, Sesriem, Dune 45, and Sossusvlei Dunes itself!
Located just south of the boundary of Etosha National Park in northwestern Namibia, Etosha South makes up the southern region of this wild paradise. The area is comprised of a collection of world class private game reserves. The national park can be accessed via the southern entrance at Andersson’s Gate.
Visitors can catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife, including lion, giraffe, elephant, white and black rhino, and a multitude of plains game. Popular activities include enjoying an open 4x4 safari with an expert guide, which can be half day or full day drives with the option of a picnic lunch with wine on the full day game drive.
Set along Namibia's spectacularly scenic coast, the seaside town of Swakopmund is known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. Founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany.
Now a seaside resort town, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, adventure options, laid-back atmosphere and cool sea breeze make it a very popular Namibian destination.
Visitors can look forward to a number of exciting activities, including quad biking, horse riding, paragliding, sightseeing, and fascinating desert tours.
As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness are likely to end up staying at Sesriem, which is 65 kilometers away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes.
Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges.
The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem' - six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.
Located in southwestern Africa, Namibia boasts a well-developed infrastructure, some of the best tourist facilities in Africa, and an impressive list of breathtaking natural wonders.
Visitors can explore the capital of Windhoek and discover the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund, boasting remnants of the country’s German influence, reflected in the architecture, culture, cuisine, and the annual Oktoberfest celebrations.
To properly appreciate this extraordinary country, you will have to venture out of the cities to explore the remarkable natural landscapes that Namibia has to offer. These include:
