Sundarbans National Park, the innumerable mouths of Ganges form the largest delta and part of this vast Mangrove swamp, is a 2585 square kilometers (Indian part) wildlife reserve that extended into Bangladesh. It’s designated the World Heritage Site by UNESCO and as part of “Project Tiger” has one of the largest tiger population of any of the Indian national parks.

It is worth to mention that you wouldn’t want to get too close to these Royal animals, lying in wait beside the narrow channels that crisscross the estuarine forest.

An entry in the visitors’ book at “Sajnekhali” seems to sum up the feeling of many visitors to the Sundarbans who "came here but has not seen any tiger, his visit is not success”. However, the area has other attraction and you perceptibly see some wildlife, mainly spotted deer, wild pig, crocodile, water lizard, and worth to mention monkeys.

The journey here, by local boats and cycle-Rickshow through small traditional Bengali villages, can be fun. The whole area is wonderfully peaceful after frenetic Kolkata and is teeming with birdlife. At the Sajnekhali visitors center, there’s a crocodile enclosure, sark pond, turtle hatchery, and an interesting Mangrove Interpretation Center. From here Forest permission, Guide, Boat permits has to be obtained since permission is mandatory to visit any place of forest area.

There are watch towers here and several other points around the park. In the south of the Sundarbans there are two other sanctuaries at Lothian and Haldi Island, reached from Namkhana (three hours bus journey from Kolkata) and then boat journey of several hours.
