Program

Day 1: Towards the Megadiverse Choco

Today, you will will start the journey to one of the richest places in biodiversity in the world, the Choco Forest, considered a "hot spot" for its abundant and endemic biodiversity.

During the tour, departing from Quito, you will be able to observe a beautiful transition of landscapes of the Andean zone, passing through the cloud forest, until arriving at the tropical Chocó forest.

Once you arrive at the lodge, you will enjoy a snack and the hospitality of the place. After a welcome talk and a delicious meal, you will enjoy the colorful sunset over the forest. After dinner, you will take the lanterns and make the first walk to see the herpetofauna of the place.

Day 2: Birds, frogs, and forest

With the sun rising over the horizon, you will get up early to look upon the arrival of the birds at the feeders located near the main house. You can watch several species of birds, and if you are lucky, you could see the Araçari toucans, which usually arrive. Sometimes, the Chocó Toucan is also seen perched on nearby trees, but unlike the other birds, it is more distrustful and does not get so close.

While watching the birds, you will have a delicious breakfast that will recharge your energy for a walk through the forest to reach a beautiful waterfall. It is recommended to take your bathing suit as a bath in it is really comforting after the walk.

Throughout this journey, you have to be alert for any animal that can be observed!

Upon arrival at the hotel, you will have lunch, then you will have some time for talking and resting. In the afternoon, you will go to one of the attractions of the place, the hide for birdwatching. This is a place with glass mirror walls that allows you to be close to the birds that come to eat and bathe without being seen. Yet, keeping silent is key, since the birds do not see you but they do listen to you.

At night, before the night walk, you will have a talk by Christophe who will talk about his project to protect the Choco.

Day 3: From heat to cold

Just like the day before, you will get up early in the morning and enjoy the company of the birds having breakfast. Then you will take a walk through the forest and have time to practice photography of the local flora and fauna.

Pack your bags and be ready leave for the Andean area after lunch. You will exchange the high tropical forests for the golden plains of the grasslands of the Andean moorland.

Upon arrival at the hotel, you will enjoy a relaxing night accompanied by hot drinks, local stories, and the warmth of the place.

Day 4: Inside the crater

After breakfast, you will go by truck to the Quilotoa lagoon, this is a caldera full of water that was formed by the collapse of the volcano of the same name. It is considered one of the most beautiful lagoons of volcanic origin in the world.

You will leave the hotel and after approximately 45 minutes, you will arrive at the crater viewpoint (get your cameras ready), where you will start the descent walk towards the crater. Once there, you will round it to go to "Chugchilan". During the walk, you will pass through "Guayama", a town located on the way there.

After a weary morning, at night you will recharge your energies with a delicious dinner. Also, if the sky allows, you can enjoy a starry night.

Day 5: From the clouds to the city

After breakfast, you will go to the moorland of "Chinalo Alto", where you will visit the local artisan cheese-factory which has been managed by the community for 40 years, creating a livelihood for the locals who dedicate themselves to field work and livestock. This cheese shop receives milk every day from the small producers for making Mozzarella, Emental, and Andino cheese; very famous in the Ecuadorian highlands.

Then you will reach the entrance of the cloud forest that is in the "Sachapungo" zone. In this paradisaical place, you can appreciate a landscape that resembles a "cloud mattress" that covers the canopy of the forest.

After lunch, have our suitcases ready for the return trip to the capital of Ecuador, Quito.
