Day 5: Nairobi - Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Giraffe Centre

Today, your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel at 9 a.m. Get ready to experience two of the most unique animal sanctuaries. This half-day tour will bring you face to face with endangered Rothschild’s giraffes and orphaned baby elephants! What an incredible way to experience Nairobi’s unique animal parks.

You will arrive at this world-famous Sheldrick Wildlife Trust animal refuge in time for the daily feeding at 11 a.m. Imagine the sight of dozens of baby elephants running to their handlers and latching on to giant baby bottles! It’s a scene of unforgettable cuteness. After the babies have had their fill of formula, it’s bath time. Just feet from you, the tiny elephants roll in the mud, playing and spraying each other.

This very special place is a haven for orphaned elephants from Kenya and other countries. Rescued after their mothers or families died from drought, accident or were poached for their ivory, these babies finally have a safe home.

Later at 12:30 head out for lunch at a nice restaurant not far from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (at own extra cost). After lunch, around 2 p.m, proceed to Giraffe Centre. Climb the feeding tower here and offer a giraffe a food pellet. Not only may he (or she) accept your offering, you may be rewarded with a kiss! Such occurrences are not uncommon at the Giraffe Centre, a principal sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe.

Return back to your hotel for relaxation and refreshments as you wait for dinner time at Carnivore restaurant. The restaurant is just next to Tamarind hotel, hence a walking distance. The meats are roasted on traditional Maasai swords over a huge charcoal pit that dominates the restaurant's entrance. The rough-hewn beams combine the rustic feel of a rural setting with that of a medieval banqueting hall.

The restaurant doesn't conform to the familiar restaurant traditions. First, the soup of the day along with a plate of homebaked brown bread and butter are served. Then, an army of carvers move table to table, swords laden carving juicy cuts onto sizzling cast-iron plates. Accompanying the meat feast is a selection of salads, vegetable side dishes, and sauces. The feeding frenzy doesn't stop until you declare defeat by lowering the white paper flag perched atop the central tray. This is then followed by dessert and coffee. A vegetarian menu is also offered.

  • Meals: breakfast and dinner
  • Accommodation: Tamarind Tree Hotel
