Location

This wildlife tour will be located in Pacaya - Samiria National Reserve, Peru. It is a protected area located in the Loreto Peru, Peruvian Amazon Region. With an area of 2.08 million hectares (20,800 square kilometers), it is the largest Peru's national reserve, the second protected area in the country (after the Alto Purus National Park), and the fourth protected area in all of South America. It is also the protected area of flooded Amazon (known as floodplain ecosystem) largest in South America because it was designated RAMSAR site on August 28, 1986. According to the World Commission on Protected Areas, it has the status of Area Managed Resource Protected.

The extension of the reserve represents one point five percent of the Peruvian territory and six percent of the Loreto region also is slightly larger than the surface of Slovenia and comparable to 50% of the territory of Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Costa Rica or 23% in Portugal, ensuring the ecological and genetic representation of the region. It comprises about 208 population centers with approximately 40,000 people living in the area and 50 thousand in the buffer zone. There are 56 native communities’ affiliated indigenous organizations: AIDECOS, AIDEMA, ACOIBAHM, ADECOP, and ACODECOSPAT. Both the native population (belonging to the cocama-cocamilla ethnicity), as mestizo, remain the exploitation of natural resources in the reserve.
