Program

Day 1: La Paz - Sajama National Park

Today is the starting of your adventure! Pick up from the hotel at 7:00 a.m. and leave with direction to Patacamaya located 96 kilometers from La Paz, capital of the department at an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level. Enjoy the road in the high plateau of the Andes and arrive at Condoramaya to visit the Tombs of Mummies (polychromatic archaeological burial site).

Then continue to Curahuara de Carangas, also known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes, to appreciate all the renaissance structures. Continue the route until Sajama National Park. Later you can relax entering the hot springs at 35 degrees. Have a delicious dinner at the hotel and rest to prepare for the next day.

Day 2: Huayña Khota lagoon - Jirira

Early start for the adventure to drive with the four by four jeeps to Huayña Khota Lagoon, home of flamingoes and vicugnas. Continue to Sequegua where you may enjoy the mountains that surround the road. Going by Kewiña forests and observing llamas and alpacas, you will ascend to arrive at the three lagoons in the Chilean frontier.

After arriving at Sabaya Village, enjoy a delicious lunch on the way. Now head to Salar de Coipasa, a small desert of salt that you will cross to reach the town of Salinas where you will have a small stop and then go to the hotel in Jirira town for dinner and rest to begin the adventure on Uyuni salt flats the next day.

Day 3: mounds of salt - Pia Pia island

Start your tour off at 10:30 a.m. with a visit to mounds of salt (next to the salt flats). Take pictures as you ride along the immense white expanse of salt. Visit Los Ojos de Agua Salada (salt water eyes) and then a hotel made completely of salt which is currently being used as a museum.

Lunch is served most of the time in the middle of that salt flats so you can have a nice time to contemplate the vastness of the place. After lunch, visit the fish island, a place where petrified coral is seen all over.

Take time to organize your group for fun perspective and proportion-distorted photos on the blinding white surface of the salt flats. Then, head to Pia Pia Island for the unique experience of seeing a beautiful sunset over the salt flats.

Day 4: Chiguana Desert - Red Lagoon

Start off at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast. First stop is at Chiguana Desert on the south side of Uyuni salt flat, surrounded by volcanoes such as Ollague (5,840 meters), which is still active and that you can see from the lookout.

Continue along a rocky road, Pasito Tuntun, to the beautiful Andean lagoons inhabited by three species of Andean flamingos. Marvel at three lagoons on the way: Cañapa, where you will see the first pink flamingos, Hedionda, where lunch will be served, and Chiarcota, where you will see a wider variety of birds and altiplanic fauna.

Then you will enter the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve and visit the Desert of Siloli at 4,550 meters (the highest and driest in the world) and take a photo next to the ‘Rock Tree’, a lava rock formation.

Before arriving at your final destination today, you will stop at the overlook point by the Red Lagoon to see more pink flamingos in their natural habitat and admire this intense red-colored lake. Stay the night at a shared family lodging.

Day 5: Sol de Mañana Geyser

Get off to an early start around 5:00 a.m. to visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser at 5,000 meters and walk next to fumaroles and steaming craters filled with boiling pots of mud at 150 to 200 degrees Celsius. Continue to the open air hot springs and take a bath in 35 degrees before enjoying a pancake breakfast.

The next places to visit are the Dali Desert where Salvador Dali found his inspiration from boulders sprinkled in the middle of the desert, and then the Green Lagoon (toxic copper water at the foot of the big Licancabur Volcano at 6,000 meters, a few kilometers from the Bolivia-Chile border).

Then head back to Uyuni passing by the beautiful scenery along the way and eating a picnic lunch along the roadside. On the way, pass by the Valley of the Rocks, the Alota settlement, and the San Cristobal Village where you will visit the church and see the exquisite colonial paintings. Return to Uyuni by 6:30 p.m. where your tour comes to an end.

Weather changes

During the rainy season from January to April, the Salt Flats fill up with water so it is not possible to cross them in the same way as during the dry season. As a consequence, the itinerary is modified during that period. The main changes are usually as follows: Instead of stopping at the Inca Wasy (Fish Island), you will stop at a place where the water reflects the sky and where it seems that the sky and the ground merge into one.

On day three, you might sleep in a different location. You will visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser and hot springs at the end of day four instead of on the morning of day three. When snowing, the roads may and will be closed because of the heavy snow so, on the third day, an optional route will be used instead (Red and Green Lagoon will not be seen).

Included excursions

  • Visit the Tombs of Mummies and relax in the hot springs on your first day
  • Visit the mounds of salt and Los Ojos de Agua Salada on your second day
  • Visit Pia Pia island and watch the sunset on your third day
  • Visit the Desert of Siloli and take a photo next to the Rock Tree on your fourth day
