Check-in Time:

The accommodation will be bare-bones basic with basic cots in shared rooms. On occasion, there may not be electricity or running water due to a lack of infrastructure and services in the national park.

You will be traveling on the high plateau and in the middle of the desert so toilet facilities will only be available on the third day and might have a small local cost. You will be staying in a three-stars hotel. An electric blanket is included in the price.

Day 1: Isla Incahuasi

Please arrive at the local office at least 15 minutes prior to departure. You must check in for the tour at 10:00 a.m. if you are already in Uyuni. Start your tour off at 10:30 a.m. with a visit to Uyuni’s ‘train graveyard’ to see the first locomotives in Bolivia.

Then visit the small settlement of Colchani (salt miners workshops next to the salt flats) where you can see handicrafts made of salt and textile art made of llama and alpaca. Take photos as you cruise along the vast white expanse of salt. Visit Los Ojos de Agua Salada (‘saltwater eyes’) and then a hotel made completely of salt which is currently a museum.

Lunch will be served on “Isla Incahuasi” (Fish Island) where you will have time to take a hike to the top of the island. There you will see giant cactus and rock formations made of petrified coral. Take time to organize your group for fun perspective and proportion-distorted photos on the blinding white surface of the salt flats. Then, head to Pia Pia Island for the unique experience of seeing a beautiful sunset over the salt flats.

Day 2: Laguna Colorada

Start off at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast. First stop is at Chiguana Desert on the south side of Uyuni salt flat, surrounded by volcanoes such as Ollague (5,840 meters), which is still active and that you can see from the lookout.

Continue along a rocky road, Pasito Tuntun, to the beautiful Andean lagoons inhabited by three species of Andean flamingos. Marvel at three lagoons on the way: Cañapa, where you will see the first pink flamingos, Hedionda, where lunch will be served, and Chiarcota, where you will see a wider variety of birds and altiplanic fauna.

Then you will enter the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve and visit the Desert of Siloli at 4,550 meters (the highest and driest in the world) and take a photo next to the ‘Rock Tree’, a lava rock formation.

Before arriving at your final destination today, you will stop at the overlook point by the Red Lagoon to see more pink flamingos in their natural habitat and admire this intense red-colored lake. Stay the night at a shared family lodging.

Day 3: Uyuni

Get off to an early start around 5:00 a.m. to visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser at 5,000 meters and walk next to fumaroles and steaming craters filled with boiling pots of mud at 150 to 200 degrees celsius. Continue to the open air hot springs and take a bath in 35 degrees before enjoying a pancake breakfast.

The next places to visit are the Dali Desert where Salvador Dali found his inspiration from boulders sprinkled in the middle of the desert, and then the Green Lagoon (toxic copper water at the foot of the big Licancabur Volcano at 6,000 meters, a few kilometers from the Bolivia-Chile border).

Then head back to Uyuni passing by the beautiful scenery along the way and eating a picnic lunch along the roadside. On the way, pass by the Valley of the Rocks, the Alota settlement, and the San Cristobal Village where you will visit the church and see the exquisite colonial paintings. Return to Uyuni by 6:30 p.m. where your tour comes to an end.

Weather changes

During the rainy season from January to April, the Salt Flats fill up with water so it is not possible to cross them in the same way as during the dry season. As a consequence, the itinerary is modified during that period.

The main changes are usually as follows: Instead of stopping at the Inca Wasy (Fish Island), you will stop at a place where the water reflects the sky and where it seems that the sky and the ground merge into one.

On day one, you might sleep in a different location. You will visit the Sol de Mañana Geyser and hot springs at the end of day two instead of on the morning of day three. During the winter season (from June to August), it is not possible to access Eduardo Avaroa national park (Red Lagoon, Dali Desert, Green Lagoon).

However, there is the possibility of visiting Black Lagoon and Rock Valley if on the third day of your tour it does not snow. You might also sleep in a different location due to road access as it is hard to forecast the weather at high altitudes and due to global warming and it may also snow abruptly.

Please note that this itinerary is subject to change without prior notice according to weather conditions, strikes, roadblocks, or force majeure events which are beyond Perla de Bolivia's control. They will always do their best to follow the itinerary as close as possible.
