Uganda Family Safari

This wildlife safari will take you to the less traveled and off-the-beaten tourist track, Kidepo Valley National Park, in the far north of Uganda; the few who make it to this park agree that it tops among Africa’s finest wilderness. It will feature expansive savannah plains, hills, and rivers, the big and small animals that include lions, cheetah, elephants, giraffes, and different bird species. Morning and night game drives, walking safari, a village visit, herds of big animals, and the finest wilderness are some of the highlights of this safari.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge

Being just 500 meters away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally just a stone’s throw away from the Kidepo Vallet National Park. It offers unparalleled vistas of the expansive Narus Valley, Mount Morungole, and the distant mountain ranges which form the border with Southern Sudan.

Please note that the bookings with the accommodation mentioned in the program depend on availability. Reservations will only be made after your booking. In case the mentioned accommodation is not available during the requested period, Peak Cruise Safaris will do their utmost best to book a venue in the same class for you (of course, they will only do this after consulting you).

Day 1: Travel from Kampala to Kidepo with a Lunch Break in Kitgum

Today, your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or the airport at 6 a.m. and transfer you to Kidepo Valley National Park, a park that offers one of the best wilderness experiences. You will have a stopover in Gulu to refill fuel and then proceed to Kitgum for lunch. After lunch, you will proceed to the park, arriving at your lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Journey Time: 10 hours (with breaks and stops)
  • Accommodation: Kidepo Savannah Lodge
  • Meal Plan: All meals

Day 2: Sunrise and Night Game Drive

Today, you will have early breakfast and then proceed for a sunrise game drive in Kidepo Valley National Park. The park is home to a big number of animals including the biggest buffalo herd of up to 3000 per herd. Watch out for other animals that include big numbers of elephants, giraffes, zebras, different types of antelopes, a pride of lions, and it is the only national park with cheetahs in Uganda.

The park is not only endowed with great numbers of animals but with beautiful stunning scenery and colorful sunrises and sunsets. After the morning game drive, return to the lodge for lunch, relax, and then prepare for an evening game drive. A lot happens in the evening as the sun sets off, animals come out to graze and hunting also happens because dinner is needed as usual.

  • Optional: Night game drive

In the evening after early dinner, you will go back for a night game drive. With a ranger guide from Uganda Wildlife Authority, you will head out into the park in the night to experience the nocturnal life of lions, porcupine, elephants, among others; then return to the lodge for your overnight. This optional night game drive costs 30 USD per person.

  • Accommodation: Kidepo Savannah Lodge
  • Meal Plan: All meals

Day 3: Morning Game Drive with Afternoon Karamojong Encounter

Early in the morning after breakfast, you will proceed for a game drive in the park where you will view many animals including lions, elephants, giraffes, bird species, buffaloes, and many more. You will have a lunch break as you prepare for an afternoon Karamojong encounter where you will discover how these people live, relate, and socialize; this is probably the best day of your safari! Retire from the activity and return to your lodge as you prepare for a long travel tomorrow.

  • Accommodation: Kidepo Savannah Lodge
  • Meal Plan: All meals
  • Optional: Guided walk

Today after early breakfast, you will go for a guided walking safari starting from Apoka Bandas. The walk starts at 7 a.m. and is guided by an experienced and knowledgeable ranger-guide. You will spot animals through walking instead of being in a car. You will look out for different animals, and the guide will help identify animal hove prints and poo. In Uganda, walking safaris only take place in Lake Mburo National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park; the walk takes about three to four hours.

You will then return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will take a short walk to one of the villages around the park. You will have an opportunity to interact with the local people and buy local crafts made by them, afterward, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer Back to Kampala for Departure

Today, wake up early, have early breakfast, and at 6 a.m., leave for Kampala with a lunch stopover in Gulu town. This is the end of the wilderness experience. Accommodation for this night is not inclusive in the program. If you wish to depart tonight from the airport in Entebbe, make sure your flight is 10 p.m. or later. If you want Peak Cruise Safaris to book one (or more) nights in Kampala and/or Entebbe, please let them know.
