From a number of resorts and other accommodations in Tomohon, Onong's Palace offers spacious cottages with comfortable beds at best deal. The resort is named after the owner Onong who loves arts and in fact also owns an art shop and restaurant located right in front of the road leading up to the resort. Join in a 3-day bird watching tour through the Sulawesi jungle and take the chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of Onong Palace and the abundant endemic birds of Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve.

Onong's Palace is a resort located in Kinilow Village uphill, 300 metres away from the bustling main road boasting a great green nature environment and excellent spot for taking panorama photos of Mt.Lokon. Its garden, restaurant, and the cottages are artistically designed to the last detail to suit your stay while keeping the environment unharmed.

The cottages

Onong's Palace has set strong principles of being environmentally friendly and every aspect of its development and operation is sensitively synthesized towards nature conservation. Since the vegetation in the resort area is left as it is, the sensation of being in a small jungle is strongly felt while reading your books at the balcony of your cottage. In the morning you wake up to a symphony of bird songs. Absolutely an ideal place for those seeking even more intimate contact with nature.

Standard cottage

There are 4 doubles and 1 twin-bedded standard cottages with spacious balcony available, each with shower, tv and tea or coffee making facilities. Maximum 2 extra beds can be added and the cottage can fit maximum 4 persons.

Family cottage

Only one cottage which has 1 double and 1 single bed with space for 2 extra more beds. The cottage is equipped with shower, tv set and tea / coffee making facilities and spacious balcony.

Family quad cottage

Only one cottage with of 1 double and 1 twin room and enough space for 2 more extra beds. The cottage is equipped with shower with bathtub, tv set and tea / coffee making facilities, refrigerator, sitting room, and spacious balcony.

The restaurant

The resort restaurant is designed the way that all traditional artistic elements highlight the place. The combination of bamboo and wooden installation under palm-leaves-roof and framed within lush vegetation with cool mountain air plus Onong's famed delicious food, ensure a wonderful time while dining.

A TV set with VCD player located in the centre of the restaurant, a bar at the corner serving cold beers and other liquor would always accompany you after the meals.

Day 1

Pick you up at hotel or airport in Manado and directly to Batu Putih village. Check in at the homestay and have lunch. After, you will start to explore the jungle with your guide and ranger. Today you will search birds like Sulawesi scops owl which is one of the highlight bird targets to photograph.

Day 2

Start the tour around 5 a.m. so that you will catch the highlight species such as green backed kingfisher, lilac- cheeked kingfisher, dwarf kingfisher, ashy woodpecker and many more birds. Come back to homestay for breakfast and after you will continue the tour to spot some birds which you did not see on first day. Back to homestay for lunch and then you will go to mangrove area by boat to spot the great billed kingfisher and some other birds such as: white-rumped cuckoo-shrike, pink-necked green pigeon, etc.

Day 3

Start tour around 5 a.m. to go to Temboan Hills (around 20 minutes by car), spend 2-3 hours there and spot some birds such as : Sulawesi cicadabird, great-billed hanging parrot, Sulawesi-dwarf hornbill, etc. Once you are back to the homestay you will have breakfast and be transferred to Manado town or Manado airport.

Included excursions

Included in day 2 program is a mangrove trip by traditional fisherman’s boat, for more birding or sightseeing opportunities. The trip is tide / weather dependent.


Tangkoko Nature Reserve

Tangkoko Nature Reserve is a 9000 hectare nature reserve that has attracted naturalists, researchers, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world. The reserve is home to various kinds of rare and endemic animals and plants. During trekking here you might get the privilege to see tarsius spectrum, the world’s smallest primate, large groups of black crested macaques, couscous, Sulawesi hornbills and many other birds, plants in various sizes and colours, all in their natural habitat. Sulawesi has the highest percentage of endemic birds of any islands in the world. The birding in many places is also easy, and almost all endemic species can be seen in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Mount Mahawu and Dumoga Bone National Park. You can spot: kingfisher, hornbill, pitta, maleo, sulawesi owl, sulawesi hawk eagle, etc. Experienced rangers will guide you. And don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera, this is one trip you would want to capture on film.
