Mikumi National Park is the 3rd largest national park after the Serengeti. Covering an area of the 3,230-square kilometer, it abuts the northern border of Africa’s biggest game reserve, the Selous. The national park is accessible all year round due to its fine roads which never get affected by the rains dropping during the wet season.
The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata floodplain which is the popular piece of Mikumi National Park draw some comparisons to the more famous Serengeti plains.
The Mkata River floodplain supports the large population of wildlife including buffalos, wild dogs, elands, elephants, giraffes, hartebeests, zebras, leopards, antelopes, greater kudus, and many others. Additionally, more than 400 bird species have been recorded with such a colorful feather as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, and bateleur.
