Tarangire National Park boasts larger herds of elephants and provides an excellent habitat for lions, leopards, buffalos, and many antelope species unique to East Africa. These include Lesser Kudu Fringe, Eared Oryx, and Grant Gazelle. Herds up to 300 elephants dig for water in the dry riverbeds for underground streams while migratory wildebeest, like the zebra, buffalos, impalas, gazelles, hartebeests, and elands crowd the plains.
Highlights of the crater include the endangered black rhinos, who are protected within its rim. Giant tusked elephants wander the forests, black-maned lions stalk the grasslands, and flamingoes crowd the soda lakes. Cheetahs move in and out of the crater, while lseopard are most often encountered in the spectacular Lerai Forest.
Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the most renowned wildlife parks in the world and is well-known for its great migration. The variety and sheer numbers of wildlife in the Serengeti is unmatched to anywhere else in Africa, which is why it is such an integral part of a Tanzanian safari. The Serengeti is vast and beautiful and guarantees an exceptional year-round safari experience, but it is the great migration, in which tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebras take part, that is the most well-known and considered the greatest wildlife show on earth.
Serengeti National Park is renowned for its unique natural phenomenon extensively known as the Great Migration; a progressive trekking of wildebeest from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara and back in search of water, pastures, and breeding grounds. Other highlights include Masai rock paintings and the musical rocks.
You’re bound to stumble across hippos at other Serengeti watering holes, but nothing can compare to the spectacle of the Retina Hippo Pool in Central Serengeti. Where the Seronera and Orangi rivers converge, you'll find a deep puddle of water constantly churned by roughly 200 sloshing, playing hippos. Serengeti is arguably the greatest wildlife destination in Africa.
