Program

Day 1: Arrival

After your pick up from the airport or train station, you will spend the first night in the Nemeza Outdoor Center in Chumalóvo. Here you can get a rest from your travel. Take a hot shower, taste the local food, and find a good night’s sleep in one of the cozy guest rooms. First details about the tour and individual preferences can be discussed.

Day 2: Start of the trek

After a tasty breakfast, gather your equipment and prepare for take-off. A microbus will transport you to the starting point of the trek (60 kilometers), the village “Dilove” which is considered to be the geographical centre of Europe.

After registration in the national park centre, the trek will finally start! Make your way up the mountain along the mountain river “white stream”. It will take about 10 kilometers to reach the location of the first campsite, a beautiful meadow in the forest. The perfect distance for you to get acquainted with the terrain and the surroundings.

Day 3: River White Stream - Polonina Lysya

After breakfast, gather your tents and get ready for the next section of the hike. You will again follow the river upwards, hiking on a shadowy dirt path. After every corner, great views of the Ukrainian and Romanian mountains will open up, guaranteeing a great hiking experience.

After a reviving lunch break, continue your way up to the amazing alpine meadows called “Poloninas”, which are typical for the Ukrainian Carpathians. Once leaving the shade of the forests, you will walk along the mountain ridge, across the soft grass, amid an incredible mountain panorama. On the Polonina Lysya, you will finally build your night camp and enjoy the beauty of the sunset together.

Day 4: Pip Ivan (1937 meters) - Mezhipotoki

After waking up to the clear air and soothing calmness of the Polonina, prepare yourself physically and mentally for the steepest ascent so far: you will hike to the peak of the mountain called Pip Ivan, the highest mountain in that part of the mountains. A big part of the hike will lead you exactly along the Romanian / Ukrainian border. So, you will have the chance to hike on either side of the border, whichever country you prefer.

Having reached the top of Pip Ivan, you will be rewarded with an amazing view. During a snack break, you will have a chance to take in the beauty of the moment. You will then continue to the next campsite, a calm meadow in the forest.

Day 5: Mika-Mare (1815 meters) - Korbul-Stog (1650 meters) - Polonina Radul

Today a seemingly endless number of mountains awaits you, with mysterious names like Mezhipotoki and Mika-Mare. The main mountain which you plan to climb today is called Stog. This mountain once represented the border between three states: Romania, Czech-Slowakia and Poland. Nowadays, this remote mountain is habitat to many wild animals and rarely visited by people.

You will climb to the top and from there descend to a nearby mountain meadow, Polonina Radul, where you will set your camp and watch the incredible night sky with thousands of stars.

Day 6: River Shybene - Village Shybene

The last day in the mountains leads you down from the Polonina to the village of Shybene. On the hike, you will follow the river Shybene. On the way, you will meet local shepherds, which pasture their sheep on the alpine meadows during the summer months. A centuries-old practice which is typical for the population of the Carpathian Mountains.

You will get the opportunity to taste their traditional sheep cheese called Brinsa. Not far from the village, set up your final night camp. You will have time to recall the experiences of the trek around the campfire and enjoy the last night under the open sky.

Day 7: Departure

After enjoying your last shared breakfast, set out for the last kilometres to the village of Shybene. A bus will pick you up from the picturesque mountain village and bring you back to civilization. On the way, you will stop at a traditional Transcarpathian restaurant, enjoying a tasty meal and all the cold drinks that you have been dreaming of during the hike.

After exchanging hugs and contacts, you will finally part. Transport can be organized to Baia Mare, Lviv, and other locations. You are also welcome to book another night at the Nemeza Outdoor Center before continuing your journey or travel back home.

Wildlife

Please note that Nemeza cannot guarantee the sight of all mentioned wildlife. Since the area is populated by completely wild-living animals the chances of spotting them solely depend on timing, behaviour, but also a good portion of luck.

The guides will take you to those spots with the biggest likelihood of spotting different kinds of animals, but can´t ensure you the encounter with some wildlife since you are after all just guests in that wild nature and not in control of environmental conditions.

Location

This trekking tour will take place in the Carpathian Biosphere Reservoir, along the Ukrainian / Romanian mountain range called Maramures. This region is widely remote due to its location at the border. Giving plants and wildlife an excellent possibility to thrive.

The structure of the mountains is a little rougher than in the rest of the Ukrainian Carpathians, including more rocks and boulders, alpine meadows and wonderful views. Visitors can also enjoy unique plant life in some of the last virgin forests of Europe and drink fresh water from the many natural springs. Every night a camp will be set up in a new intriguing place in the wild.

Transcarpathia

Transcarpathia is the westernmost region in Ukraine, bordering with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Due to its geographical location it is populated by a number of ethnic groups and therefore a melting pot for different cultures and languages. Until today most of those ethnic groups have preserved their traditions and culture, jointly making Transcarpathia a unique place.

Also unique is the wild nature which was able to sustain in Transcarpathia. Separated from the rest of the country by the Carpathian Mountains, Transcarpathia was always last to be hit by changes and slowest to transform.

The underdeveloped infrastructure in the region is a burden for both locals and visitors, but a stroke of luck for nature: Transcarpathia is the only region in Europe where the original landscape is still maintained on a large scale. Here, the last virgin beech forests impress with their beauty and diversity of species. Some of the rarest middle European species can be found here.

While Transcarpathia is a well-known touristic location for Ukrainians, it is more or less unknown to international tourism. This makes it a fascinating and authentic place, giving visitors the chance to experience not only wild and genuine nature, but to gain an insight into Transcarpathian life and tradition. And of course, to get a taste of the incomparable hospitality of Transcarpathian people.
