You will stay in various accommodations provided by NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar that consist of only the best accommodation options. Although NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar uses a variety of properties, their preference is for small, characterful, owner-managed properties which are crucially located close to the best wildlife sites. It helps keep travel to a minimum and ensure you are in the right place at the right time, although it does mean on occasion, the location is a higher priority than comfort.

Depending on what is available locally, NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar can arrange everything from top-end accommodation with all the associated comforts, to simple mid-range camps, lodges, and hotels. Even if your preference is for luxury, it may be worth suffering some minor discomfort for a few nights to get the very best animal sightings – as long as you can then return to comfortable accommodation. Whatever trip type you choose, all your accommodation and transport are included in the price of your safari.

Accommodations for this safari are in standard hotels / bungalows (similar to European three-star hotels) with bed and breakfast basis. Please note that this trip cannot be adjusted for luxury hotel options in some places. Additionally, hotels can be replaced by similar ones.

Day 1 and 11: Tana - Hotel Chalet des Roses

The hotel Chalet des Roses is located in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, specifically in the quarter of Antsahavola. The hotel is centrally located in the heart of the city – surrounded by the American, French, and Swiss Embassies, and numerous international banks – ensuring a safe and vibrant environment. The Chalet des Roses offers the comforts of a modern hotel and classic charm, decorated in classic Italian tastes, with the aromas of Italian cuisine in its restaurant.

Day 2 - 4: Ankarafantsika National Park - Gite de Ampijoroa

Gite de Ampijoroa has seven basic lakeside bungalows – these are set discreetly in the forest and face Lake Ravelobe. They are clean, comfortable, and simple, and are ideal for you to get an early start in the forest (being a two-minute walk from the park entrance). Across the road at the campsite and research station is the simple, open-air restaurant La Pigargue – the food is very good.

Day 5: Mahajanga - Karibu Lodge

Located in the residential area of La Corniche, Karibu Lodge has a magnificent view of the sea. Built with great taste with local materials, i.e. Mahajanga stone and Tananarive granite, it emerges a lot of charm. This luxury lodge offers very spacious suites including a terrace, a living room, a private bathroom with sanitary facilities, an air-conditioned room. To have breakfasts, you will be welcomed in a restaurant with a large shaded terrace with a panoramic view of the sea. To relax and refresh, you will have a swimming pool a few meters from the sea.

Day 6 - 7: Ampitsopitsoka Village

The village community will provide you with food, full board, drinks, and booze. Accommodation will be in the family, in tents in the camp, or in the bungalows of Madame Paulette located on the beach.

Day 8 and 10: New Protected Area Antrema and Katsepy

Overnight at the rustic cabins of Ms Chabaud on the beach.

Day 9: Antsoheribory

Overnight at the bivouac on the beach, on a full board basis.

This safari is the best way to explore the North-West – a new destination for ecotourism in Madagascar. The main part of this trip within NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar’s responsible tourism policy framework will be conducted with the participation and organization of local communities and community residents. Due to the fact that this tour demands significant logistic efforts (powerful 4x4 car, canoes, motorboats, and Dhow) and organizing of bivouac as well as organizing of your meals (full board with the participation of local communities) during your trip in the section from Mahajanga to Mahajanga, the price of the safari is slightly higher than on traditional routes. This trip is quite strenuous and the camping is fairly basic. However, the splendid nature makes one forget about the lack of common luxuries.

  • Transport: powerful 4 x 4 car, canoes, motorboats, and Dhow
  • Distance: about 1,700 kilometers
  • Camp: 5
  • Difficulty: middle
  • Regions: North-West, Antananarivo and around

Adventure safari

This ecotourism revolution is an “off-the-beaten-track” adventure. You will explore a number of Madagascar’s most awe-inspiring places. The wildlife safari of this otherworldly land is set to take in as much of this biological melting pot as possible during your time here. It will confirm again the uniqueness of Madagascar’s biodiversity and habitats (landscape). At the Mahavavy delta, the fishermen’s village of the Ampitsopitsoka will warmly welcome you in among them in the community. You will also enjoy this unspoiled beach. You will also observe lemurs springing from branches to branches in the mangroves, or a few crocodiles like merged with the rock.

You can expect hope to see representatives of Madagascar’s endemic bird families during your time here. Besides the birds, you experience up to lemurs (including the world-famous dancing Sifakas), other mammals from civets to strange tenrecs (the planet’s most primitive mammals), many of species of chameleons, cryptic leaf-tailed geckos, and other bizarre reptiles and amphibians.

Rich by a cultural heritage and an exuberant vegetation, your stay in the North-West region promises to be unforgettable. The region is crossed by impressive mountains, great plains, and plateaus, but also a savannah where you may see pleasant palm trees. As its inhabitants come from all over the world (Africa, Arabian Peninsula, India, Europe, and Asia), it is a very cosmopolitan district. Don’t miss to admire the beauty of its beaches, with an always-sunny weather, and the whirlwind of landscapes, always more colorful than the others.

The Malagasy way of life

The Malagasy go to bed with the chickens and get up with the roosters. As everywhere in the tropics, people of Malagasy here have early dawn and early sunset. All of NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar's tours will start early to see the most interesting of Madagascar because, during the daytime, animals are asleep or have a rest, and birds fly away. Only in the afternoon their vigorous activity restarts. Usually, breakfast is served from 05:30 everywhere.

The tour guides

NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar’s tours are led by experienced and highly trained tour leaders, who are there to ensure you get the most out of your adventure. Your tour leader will organize your holidays from A to Z, arrange all the activities, transportation, and accommodation so that you can relax and enjoy the experience. They are chosen for their professionalism, unbridled passion to explore and a desire to share in the experience. They have hiked hundreds of kilometers of national parks trails, slept under the stars, and done almost every activity there is, and are keen to introduce you to the places that they call home and no doubt show you some of their secret spots and favorite haunts along the way.

NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar knows from experience that there is nothing quite like an expert guide to enhance your understanding and enrich your experience. A specialist guide with a well-developed knowledge of mammals, birds, and plants, rather than generalist with only minimal knowledge of wildlife, is the key to locating what you wish to see. Where possible, NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar prefers to use the services of a private guide for the exclusive use of their clients. In some cases, the services of a local guide are used at each specific location. Whatever the circumstances, all guides will have a good command a language, and able to communicate their knowledge clearly and effectively and with enthusiasm.

Day 1: Arrival at Antananarivo

Tongasoa! Welcome! How was your international flight? You are now in Antananarivo, the Capital city! NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar bureau's team will be at the airport to welcome you from your international flight. Your Adventure safari will begin in Antananarivo, where you will depart by car. Before catching a hotel, you will visit in the Ivato crocodile farm, also called “Croc Farm”. From the “Croc Farm” NDAO-i-Travel Madagascar will transfer you to your hotel, where you will stay overnight. Time to settle a bit and get refreshed. In the evening after dinner, over cocktails, you will discuss your program. Day 2: Antananarivo - Maevatanana - Ankarafantsika National Park

After breakfast, during the course of the morning, you will travel to Tsarasaotra which means bird‘s island, a small green oasis in the north of the city. The park is a refuge for many birds that can be easily watched and photographed here – among them 14 endangered species that only occur in Madagascar.

After visiting Tsarasaotra Park, you will drive along a scenic road to Ankarafantsika National Park. You will cross the beautiful hilly landscapes. The rice fields are still numerous and the traditional pise houses are well established. There are plenty of lakes, many waterfalls, fed by the rains of the moment. You are arriving in the country Sakalava.

Along the journey, you will make a stop in Maevatanana for lunch and some visits. "The beautiful village, the village where life is easy". Ancient buildings of the beginning of the twentieth century are very pleasant. Here, you will visit the Antanimbaryo market. Gold seekers tend to come together at this market on the south of the city, where purchasers coming from Tana, but also from the United States and from Thailand negotiate on the sale of this precious metal. Do not forget to bargain if you want to buy souvenirs for your loved ones. After a gold fever, you will commit the less lucrative but surely not less thrilling activity, which is watching the crocodiles from the river. The area of Maevatanana was once a favorite place for hunting crocodiles (up to 5,000 skins per year), but today this hunting is forbidden.

In addition, you will stop in the village Kandreho. This small village is renowned for the manufacture of raffia fabrics using special printing techniques ("lay masaka" that recall those of the Sunda Islands). To get some stunning photos, you will stop at the bridge over the Betsiboka Rapids. The red waters masses of the Betsiboka River at a place where some tumultuous rapids form. During the wet season, foam usually reaches the bridge.

In the evening, you will arrive in the Ankarafantsika National Park. Here you are able to take night walks to see some of the nocturnal species which are particularly prevalent in this park (including mouse lemur – the smallest primate in the world).

The activities of the day:

  • Distance: about 525 kilometers
  • Drive time: about 9 hours
  • A visit to the Tsarasaotra Park
  • A visit to the Antanimbaryo gold market
  • Watch the crocodiles from the river
  • A visit to the manufacture of raffia fabrics
  • Stopover at the bridge over the Betsiboka Rapids
  • Night tour
  • Accommodation at the hotel (bed and breakfast)

Day 3: Ankarafantsika National Park

You will set off after breakfast to explore this forest on foot where you may see the superb fauna; you will have a rich day excursion. You will take a picnic lunch to have on the trails in the national park. There are 11 very good maintained trails, which will enable a deep glimpse into the park’s ecosystems.

Ankarafantsika National Park, set on Lac Ravelobe, is a mixture of deciduous forests and wetlands. This is a major ecotourism site. It is known for its lakes and for being a haven for lemurs and endemic birds. It is covered by varied flora, mainly herbaceous and endemic woody plants. It is the home to the beautiful Coquerel’s sifaka as well as seven other species of lemurs (including western woolly, fat-tailed dwarf lemur, and mongoose lemurs) and exceptional birds (including rufous vanga and fish eagle). There is also an option of a flat-bottomed boat trip on the lake, which is perfect for birdwatching. After dinner, you will have the option of setting out on a night hike again to see some of the nocturnal inhabitants of the forest.

The activities of the day:

  • Walks in the Ankarafantsika National Park
  • Picnic lunch
  • Night tour
  • Accommodation at the hotel (bed and breakfast)

Day 4: Ankarafantsika National Park (The Ampijoroa Area)

Another day to explore this forest on foot, a superb and fauna rich day in the Ampijoroa area. Ankarafantsika National Park, and especially the Ampijoroa area, is one of the best sites for first-time visitors to Madagascar. Accommodations are good and lemur-watching is easy. With a little bit of luck, one can see all eight lemur species in the afternoon, evening, and morning. The word itself means something like “thorny mountains”, which aims at the famous canyon of the park. Besides this, Ankarafantsika is called “the kingdom of birds” because it offers various great possibilities to spot endemic birds.

The Ampijoroa area within Ankarafantsika is also the site of the world’s most important captive breeding project for endangered Madagascar turtles and tortoises, including the ploughshare tortoise or angonoka (Asterochelys yniphora), the flat-tailed tortoise or kapidolo (Pyxis planicauda), and the Madagascar big-headed side neck turtle or rere (Erymnochelys madagascariensis). The plowshare tortoise is one of the most critically endangered tortoises in the world, and this is presently the only breeding site for it outside of its natural range.

The activities of the day:

  • Walks in the Ampijoroa area
  • Picnic lunch
  • Accommodation at the hotel (bed and breakfast)

Day 5: Marovoay town - Betsiboka River

Today, you will set off early to Marovoay. The former capital of the Boeny kingdom, Marovoay enjoys an exceptional location on the banks of the delta of the Betsiboka river just ideally connected with the Mozambique Channel. It is also the second largest rice producing region of Madagascar. Never ending plains are irrigated by the abundant waters of the estuary. Marovoay means: "where there are many crocodiles”. Indeed, the rivers abound many Nile crocodiles and can be easily seen. Hunting of crocodiles was in the early twentieth century an important activity in the region, but fortunately for these big reptiles, this practice is no longer in use.

The activities of the day:

  • Distance: about 125 kilometers
  • Marovoay town
  • Descent on the Betsiboka river
