Muchenje Safari Lodge is situated high on an escarpment on the quieter western side of Botswana’s Chobe National Park. With wonderful views of the Chobe River and the seasonal flood plains, its position means that it is far away from the bustle of Kasane yet just two hours from the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Muchenje’s main lodge has an extensive lounge, bar, and dining area overlooking the Chobe River and the waterhole. The dining area is based around a communal dining experience but guests can dine privately if they so wish. There is a lapa (pergola) by the pool for a more intimate dining experience. In addition, they also offer a Bush Braai (barbeque) in a boma in the bush, close to the lodge.

Extensive deck areas allow for guests to be able to relax and enjoy the view. Perfect for enjoying the African sunset with a cold drink or gazing at the stars around our fire pit. The swimming pool is open throughout the year. It has views over the flood plain.

Muchenje Safari Lodge has ten standard chalets with private decks overlooking the flood plains and one family unit - accommodating two adults and two children from eight years old.

Day 1: Arrival

On the day of arrival, you will be shown to your room before starting an afternoon game drive at 3:30 p.m. Today's game drive explores the Chobe National Park on the western sector - with quieter roads and less traffic, enabling you to enjoy the beauty of Chobe without the crowds.

Return to Muchenje Safari Lodge at sunset to enjoy a drink before dinner. A night drive is available after dinner - an hour to explore the reserve around the camp and look for the nocturnal animals.

Day 2: Game drives and boat safari at Chobe National Park

An early morning game drive departs at sunrise and guests are encouraged to enjoy every opportunity to explore the national park. Return at breakfast to freshen up before embarking on a full day excursion into Chobe National Park. The drive then departs at 9:30 a.m. and you will be transferred to the eastern side of the park near Kasane to embark on a boat for a lunch time boat safari.

Search the deeper waters for other aquatic animals and the shorelines for the infamous herds of elephant that come to these channels to cross and bathe. Enjoy a picnic lunch as you cruise the channels enjoying this wildlife spectacle. The boat safari returns to shore at about 2 p.m. where you'll climb back onto the safari vehicle and enjoy a leisurely safari drive back through the park to Muchenje Safari Lodge to return at around 6 p.m. You'd have spent the whole day out in the park and enjoyed the diversity and sheer size of this paradise. Dinner at 8 p.m. to share your stories of the day.

Day 3: Safari activities at Chobe National Park

Another morning safari starts at sunrise, maybe a guided safari walk on the flood plains in front of camp followed by a hearty breakfast. Relax for the remainder of the day - enjoy the pool. or catch up on some sleep. Alternatively, visit the local Muchenje community to learn how rural Botswana balances life in a wildlife area. A delicious lunch before relaxing again before the afternoon safari starts at 3:30 p.m. Returning to Muchenje Safari Lodge at sunset.

Day 4: Departure

Depending on ongoing arrangements, enjoy a final safari before breakfast and check out. Transfers depart for Kasane for ongoing arrangements.

A national park in northern Botswana was first suggested in 1931. By 1953 there were further initiatives from the government and in 1960 the Chobe Game Reserve was created. The reserve was declared the Chobe National Park in 1967. The park covers 11,700n square kilometers and extends from Kasane through Serondela (the Chobe Riverfront) to Western Chobe, the Ngwezumba pans, Savute, and Linyanti. Western Chobe covers from Ihaha, the mid-point of the national park, to Ngoma and Muchenje. Western Chobe has no traffic congestion and is untouched wilderness.

The lifeblood of the park is the Chobe River, one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers. Western Chobe supports diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else in the country. The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the park and, with its close proximity to Victoria Falls and the Southern African region, the park is the ideal location for anyone interested in a combination of the natural wonder of the Victoria Falls and magnificent wildlife experience.

Muchenje is situated in the Chobe National Reserve just a short drive from Western Chobe National Park. There are no fences here and the animals roam freely from the park as from Namibia, Zambia, and beyond.

The Western Chobe area is famous for its huge concentrations of elephant, hippo, and Cape buffalo. Together with this, there are the predators - lions, leopards, wild dogs (painted wolves), hyenas, jackals, serval cats, caracal (lynx), honey badgers and crocodiles. There are estimated to be over 60,000 to 120,000 elephants in the Chobe. In the dry season one can see hundreds of these magnificent animals on the flood plains at any one time, most of which are family groups, with a few generations represented.

Nowhere in Africa are you going to see such large herds of elephant… watching them drink, play and cross the river is something you are unlikely to ever forget.
