Explore two of Botswana's iconic wilderness areas on this safari. Take a mokoro (canoe) ride to explore the waterways of the largest inland delta on earth and stand a chance to see huge herds of elephants, grazing antelopes, and sneaking wild cats from a completely different perspective.
You will be accommodated in a lodge or hotel in Maun on the first night, and in shared tents during the nights two, three, and four. Since you will be visiting wilderness areas accommodation will be mostly camping in safari tents, preferably three-meter dome tents or, at times two and a half-meter dome tents will be used on a shared basis i.e. two people per tent. The tents have built-in groundsheets and window nets. Shower buckets, bush toilets, long drops, and all the necessary camping equipment will be provided. Bedding i.e. bedrolls, mattresses, pillows, sheets, duvets, and blankets will also be made available.
A professional guide from Moonstroll Safaris will meet you upon your arrival at Maun Airport. After a brief introduction, you will be transferred to your Lodge where you are going to spend your pre–safari night. The afternoon of the day of arrival is left for you to spend at leisure, to go shopping for curios, and also to have the option of taking a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta (at an extra cost).
This activity offers an aerial view of the Okavango Delta, allowing you to see the Okavango Delta's unique water system from a different perspective. It is even possible to spot large game animals such as elephants, hippos, etc. from high above during the flight.
Today, you will be picked up in the morning. Thereafter, you will journey with you northwards to Moremi Game Reserve for a two-night stay. Moremi is situated in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango Delta and covers about a third of the total land area of the Okavango Delta. At about 3900 square kilometers, Moremi as a reserve is unfenced. This allows for the free movement of animals within the Delta according to their seasonal migrations. Moremi boasts diverse ecosystems ranging from floodplains, lagoons, grasslands, and riverine to mopane woodland.
Thus, with such a wide variety of vegetation comes a diverse spectrum of wildlife. You will enjoy your breakfast at Moremi's South Gate. This breakfast typically consists of coffee, tea, juice, cereals, rusks, fruits, etc. Thereafter, you will enter into game drive mode and spend the day searching for the wide variety of wildlife and birds that this area is famous for before being taken to your camp to spend the night.
Today you will wake up to enjoy an early breakfast. Shortly after breakfast, you will go for a morning game drive. On this safari drive, you should therefore, look out for the large herds of African elephants in the Mophane scrub and keep an eye on the elusive African wild dogs, lions, leopards, etc. You might also encounter birds of prey on this safari drive such as the mighty Martial Eagle, Tawny Eagle, the majestic African Fish Eagle, and that incredible aviator - the Bateleur and many others.
You will return to your camp around noon for lunch and a much-needed rest. In the afternoon, you will set off once again in your safari vehicle for more birding and game viewing. Come back to your camp just after sunset to have a shower and thereafter, enjoy a campfire-cooked dinner. You have two nights at a wilderness campsite to marvel at this exceedingly diverse reserve that offers an untouched wildlife experience.
Today, after breakfast, you will take a slow game drive through Moremi Game Reserve- a game drive that provides farewell to the area’s magnificent landscapes and mammals. Finally, you will head northeast towards the Khwai Concession for a two-night stay. At about 1800 square kilometers, the Khwai is situated in the northeastern Okavango next to Moremi.
It is a wildlife-prolific and varied ecosystem dominated by a patchwork of lagoons, grasslands, permanent flood plains, and large areas of Mopane woodland forests. Khwai has a marvelous selection of predators such as lions, leopards, wild dogs, cheetahs, servals, African wild cats, etc. In the afternoon, you will go for your game drive and possibly watch the sunset unfold over the Khwai River.
Today, after an early breakfast, you will go for your usual morning game drive. Your journey will follow the Khwai River’s watercourse weaving from the riverside and floodplains into the mopane veld and woodlands that make Khwai one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango. The Khwai area boasts an excellent population of African elephants, both solitary bulls and breeding herds.
The swampy areas are home to Red Lechwe. Other resident species include the Southern giraffes, buffalos, Burchell’s zebras, tsessebes, the Greater kudus, impalas, and various other nocturnal species. Khwai is also one of Botswana’s birding Mecca’s. As such the raptors and water birds are particularly abundant and make for some great photography.
The highlight today is a mokoro excursion along the Khwai River, part of the Okavango Delta system. During this mokoro excursion, you should have some great encounters with aquatic birds and several species of mammals. You will leave again in the afternoon to explore other areas of the Khwai Concession. Return back to camp in the evening whereupon you will take a shower and thereafter enjoy a scrumptious dinner prepared by your safari chef.
Today, you rise very early and greet the fresh African morning with coffee and some light breakfast. Thereafter, you head out for your morning safari drive in the Khwai Concession as the early mornings normally offer an improved opportunity to view the predators. Return to camp at the end of your safari drive for lunch and wrap up your Khwai safari thereafter.
You will be given time to pack up your luggage in the vehicles in preparation for your journey back to Maun. The safari ends upon arrival in Maun and you will be dropped off at your lodge to relax and rest. This gives you ample time to prepare for the next leg of your African safari vacation or your journey back home.
This safari officially starts in Maun, Botswana, and is intended to depart very early in the morning. It is therefore important that you plan to arrive in Maun the day before the safari starts.
