The route starts on the north side of the mountain just south of the Kenyan border and is one of the least traveled routes. The descent is down will be the Marangu Route on the south side of the mountain, so climbers see the mountain from many view points.
The drive to the trail head takes about two and a half hours from Moshi through many villages and coffee plantations, including a stop to register climbing permits at Marangu. The Rongai Route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park in Kenya which takes about two hours including the border crossing. You will need copies of passports ahead of time.
You will go on a drive to the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru for about two hours including a stop to get permits at Marangu. After signing in and preparing the porters, you will begin the hike on a wide path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering the pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife.
The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. The elevation of this montane forest is 2,000 meters or 6,560 feet to 2,650 meters or 8,700 feet with a distance of six kilometers or four miles. The total hiking time would take about three to four hours. The meal plan includes lunch and dinner and you will be staying overnight at Simba Camp.
The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. The elevation of the moorland is 2,650 meters or 8,700 feet to 3,450 meters or 11,300 feet with a distance of six kilometers or four miles. You will walk for three to four hours to reach your destination. The meal plan consists of breakfast, lunch, and dinner and you will be staying overnight at Second Cave Camp.
Today you will head out across the moorland on a smaller path toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios nearby. The elevation of this semi-desert is 3,450 meters or 11,300 feet to 3,600 meters or 11,800 feet with a distance of nine kilometers or five miles. The total walking time will take two to three hours. The meal plan includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner and you will be staying overnight at Kikelewa Camp.
Today's hike will be a short and steep climb up some grassy slopes but you will be rewarded with superb views. You will leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free time to rest or you can go and explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.
If you are spending an extra day on the mountain, you will camp for two nights here. You can hike up and around Mawenzi for your acclimatization hike. Continuing the climb, you will now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa.
There are unbelievable views at every turn and you can have your pictures taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here you will begin your descend down, stopping for lunch, and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment.
The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks, going slowly 'pole pole' and an optimistic attitude will get you there!
The elevation of the alpine desert is 4,700 meters or 15,500 feet to 5,895 meters or 19,340 feet when you descend, it will go down to 3,700 meters or 12,200 feet with a distance of six kilometers or four miles going up and 15 kilometers or nine miles when going down. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help, shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear so keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy.
Moonlight Tours Expedition vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi which will take about an hour.
