The Great Migration

From July to November one of nature’s greatest spectacles, the wildebeest migration, reaches the Mara - the sheer number of wildebeest arriving in the area is staggering. The migration is a dramatic mass movement of almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in a seasonal annual cycle driven by rainfall. To reach the Mara’s fresh grazing, wildebeest make dramatic river crossings, facing enormous crocodiles to feast on the Mara plains and regain their strength. November's short summer rains trigger the last leg of the migration, when the wildebeest move south to their Serengeti calving grounds. The calving season also happens in the Mara between December and January. Known as the green season, it’s a time when surface water is plentiful and wildebeest, zebra and antelope give birth to their calves, foals and fawns. With so much easy prey around, it is also a good time for predators to raise their cubs and pups, making for wonderful photographic opportunities.

Day 1: Nairobi to Maasai Mara

Kickstarting your safari with an early pickup from Nairobi, you will head towards the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The 6 hour long drive to the reserve covers about 280 kilometers with a combination of smooth tarred roads and bumpy muddy trials.

Note that the last 1-hour drive to Masai Mara is on the corrugated and bumpy road and may not be comfortable for clients with back problems. Clients with back problems can consider flying directly to (and out of) Masai Mara.

The long day comes to an end with a delicious dinner and overnight rest at your chosen camp or lodge.

Day 2: Maasai Mara

Your safari will begin with an early morning game drive in the grasslands followed by breakfast back at the camp. Winding up with breakfast, you will head out to spend the whole day in the park in search of its popular resident predators and prey like zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, big 5 and so on.

Packed lunch will be consumed while you are on the safari, followed by a visit to the Mara river. The river is well known for its dangerous crocodile.

The day comes to an end with a delicious dinner and overnight rest at your chosen camp or lodge.

Day 3: Maasai Mara to Nairobi

The last day of your safari will begin with an early morning game drive, allowing you to witness plenty of early morning game. Post this game drive, you will finish a heavy breakfast and then depart for Nairobi.

The drive to Nairobi is about 6 hours long with a quick stop at Narok town for lunch. On reaching Nairobi in the evening, you will be dropped of at the airport or your hotel.

Masai Mara Game Reserve

The Game Reserve is Kenya’s numero uno park and is usually on the “must visit list” of every tourist. True to its legacy, the Masai Mara is full of life and home to over 450 species of birds and animals. The highlight of these rolling grasslands and acacia savannas are the big 5 (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and rhino). To say the least, it definitely crowns the climax of every other safari in Kenya.

Apart from the famous Big 5, the Masai Mara is known for another natural spectacle - The Great Migration. It is an annual activity which includes the migration of over one million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle etc from the Serengeti in Northern Tanzania to Kenya by crossing over the Mara river in search of fresh green feeding pastures. This is generally visible in the Masai Mara region in July or August.

Mara Duma Bush camp

This is an exclusive tented camp for those who want to be true to wild experience. It is located at the bank of Talek River on the edge of the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, which is a watering point for most of wild animals especially elephants, buffalos, antelope etc.
