Guided birding in Belize

Mariposa Jungle Lodge is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Explore on your own using the nature trails and birdwatch tower or employ one of the guides to take you to different Cayo ecosystems and nesting environments. Guided bird watching tours, onsite or nearby, are available by appointment and tailored to your interests.

There are over 400 known bird species in the immediate geographical area that ranges from the broadleaf forest and open agricultural land to the nearby Mountain Pine Ridge Forest. Enjoy a wide range of those species right there on the 40-acre Mariposa property.

Each morning, an avian symphony precludes the need for an alarm clock and provides excellent birding opportunities. The sweet cooing of Mourning Doves, the noisy squawking of Green Parrots, the gentle song of the Trogon.

Sparkling Yellow Kiskadees and the magical Hummingbirds visit the office staff daily and perch right outside the windows. But nothing excites guests more than the easily-identifiable Keel-Billed Toucans with their extraordinary, disproportionate beaks and frog-like grunts.

Mariposa Birdwatch Tower

A favorite spot for bird lovers is the jungle birdwatch tower, located a short hike from the lodge. There, you climb stairs to a 16-square-foot deck about 20 feet off the ground, where you can comfortably enjoy a 360-degree view of an area brimming with different trees, plants, nests, and birdlife.

Additional notes

  • All tours are private to the lodge guests only. They can combine in small groups but only with guests at the resort.
  • The only tour that can be combined with others that are not staying at the Mariposa is the ATM Cave.

Mariposa Jungle Lodge is located near the village of San Antonio in the Cayo District of Western Belize. We have easy access to a variety of ruins, caves, cultural sights, and jungle and river adventures.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Mariposa Jungle Lodge will pick you up from the airport.

Driving directions

For those of you choosing the adventure of driving in Belize, these are the directions to get to the location. Please print off these maps and instructions as cell phone coverage in Belize can be spotty (and expensive!) and you should not rely on web-based maps for directions. Please note: speed bumps on the highway are designed for 10 miles per hour and are not always marked. Be alert.

  • Leaving the airport, you will see a junction in front of you.
  • Turn left towards Burrell Boom.
  • Turn left there up the Northern Highway away from Belize City and continue until you reach a sign to the left for Burrell Boom.
  • Turn left and continue until you reach a traffic circle where you bear right toward Belmopan.
  • After you pass the Belize Zoo, you will see a sign indicating a left turn to Belmopan and Dangriga. Ignore this.
  • Continue straight past Guanacaste Park (on your right) and over a small bridge to the village of Roaring Creek.
  • Then you’ll pass through a series of villages, including Unitedville, Blackman Eddy, and eventually Georgeville, where you’ll see a large overhead sign directing you to turn left toward to Mt. Pine Ridge and Caracol.
  • On the driver side, you’ll see a group of resort signs, including one for Mariposa Jungle Lodge.
  • So, you turn left and follow the Georgeville Road for approximately nine miles, passing a turnoff on the left to El Progresso/7 Miles and the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch on the right.
  • Soon you will reach a junction where you should turn right.
  • Landmarks: a local store called “The Malfunction Junction” and a sign to Mariposa Jungle Lodge on the corner across the road. Watch for the driveway on the left, approximately 200 feet from the corner. Pull into the second driveway, on the far side of the road sign.
  • If you miss the Georgeville Road turnoff, you will have another opportunity in Santa Elena, about five miles further along the Western Highway.
  • Again, you’ll see an overhead sign to the Mountain Pine Ridge, as well as numerous signs on the driver’s side for various resorts and tourist destinations.
  • Veer left and drive up the hill along this road, passing through the villages of Cristo Rey and San Antonio.
  • Bear left in San Antonio Village when you see the road coming to an end. Mariposa Jungle Lodge is three miles from the Village on the right.
  • If you reach the junction to the Mt. Pine Ridge and Caracol, you’ve missed the driveway by 200 feet.
