"We stayed here at the end of our safaris, and I thought I was out-safaried by the time I got here. However, the lodge was amazing and way beyond my expectations. I had booked here for the wetlands safari, hippos, crocodiles, birds etc. I hadn't realized they also have grasslands safaris. We saw lots of elephants, giraffes, and various other ungulates. Our ranger was excellent, the best one we had on our trip. Most rangers have the same anecdotes and soundbites about the wildlife (the length of a giraffe's tongue, how male hippos mark their territory, full length). However, Michael was able to educate us even further, with many things we hadn't heard yet. The drought has affected the wildlife and the surroundings, which is sad to see. Our chalets were the biggest surprise. They are reached by an elevated walkway (I guess in wetter times, over the wetlands). Each chalet is secluded, and on full-length windows to the wetlands. The showers are outdoors. It is the best outdoor showers we had on the trip (I think this was the fourth). The air conditioner worked well in the chalet. There was no mosquito net, and really no need for one. We didn't see any flying insects in the room. There is Doom and Peaceful Sleep provided in the rooms just in case. There was Wi-Fi only in the common area, and even then I never got more than two bars. I couldn't figure out where the router was, maybe in an office somewhere. In the middle of a national park, Wi-Fi is not the priority for me so it wasn't a problem. I uploaded my pics when I got back to Durban. The access road to the lodge is a gradually sloped sand road. Getting out was like driving uphill in snow -- I had to keep my speed because if I stopped I wasn't getting going again in our little 2WD. Overall it was a great experience, the safaris, the accommodation, the staff. Other sights in South Africa get more attention, this place is under the radar right now, but it should be on your list of places to go"

"From arrival to departure, we were treated like royalty. Stephanie with the welcoming drinks and service of very tasty food by an excellent chef is a real gem. A big thank you to Monique who has organized a special 60th birthday for Johann, a memory always to be cherished. Michael Botes is one of the best game rangers we have ever encountered and it was an honor to see nature through his eyes. His knowledge of animals, their behavior, insects, plants and birds is outstanding. This is definitely now our second home. Our room was well-equipped and it was a treat to see wild animals grazing outside your room while you are still in bed. The optional tours offered are outstanding. Do not miss the game drives and cruise on the lake. This is a must visit on your bucket lists."

"Thank you to Makakatana Bay Lodge for giving us a fantastic stay and a Christmas with some very special memories. The game drives were brilliant and the trip to the beach was a real highlight despite the early start. Thank you again. I would love to return to see iSimangaliso when the drought has broken and it is once again a wetland."
