Experience safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, a 75,000 hectare malaria-free reserve located northwest of Johannesburg. Everything about this place is vast; its landscapes, its heavens, and its wildlife. Madikwe Safari Lodge team cannot wait to welcome you. Start and finish every day out in the wild in search of big and small animals!
You can choose to stay in Lelapa Lodge, Kopano Lodge, or Dithaba Lodge at Madikwe Safari Lodge.
Lelapa Lodge is for families, where children of all ages are welcome. 12 deluxe suites (including family rooms) are spacious and comfortable with wood-burning fireplaces, private plunge pools, outdoor showers, and private plunge pool, just some of the added creature comforts to enhance Mother Nature’s subtle signature.
Lelapa literally means ‘family’, and this is exactly how Madikwe Safari Lodge wants you to feel. There is no restriction in terms of age or generation. You can expect warm hospitality, sublime comfort, and a compelling charm which will make you want to stay forever.
Kopano Lodge comprises just 4 suites (each with private plunge pool) which share a magnificent common area. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom, private deck, wood-burning fireplace, and private plunge pool. This lodge is ideal for the person looking for something more intimate or for smaller groups of friends. Children older than 16 are welcome. Fine dining to the hoot of an owl, the roar of a lion, or the crazed whoop of a hyena is the stuff that dreams are made of.
Dithaba Lodge has a spectacular view over the open plains. With only 4 suites (each with private plunge pool), this lodge is well-suited to a group of friends or family members making it their own while on safari, or for those who simply prefer the sound of nature and little else. Children of all ages are welcome (if the lodge is booked exclusively).
You will experience 2 daily game drives in Madikwe Game Reserve. Your game drives head out early morning at sunrise and late afternoon just before sunset in search of the many animal species which call this place home. Vehicles will stop off in a scenic spot over the course of each drive to enjoy a hot or cool beverage under a vast African sky.
Madikwe’s game viewing is on a very high standard, with regular sightings of zebra, impala, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, white rhino, lion, wild dog, elephant, white rhino, brown hyena, and spotted hyena. Leopard sightings have become a lot more frequent as individuals are more relaxed in the presence of vehicles in the area. Along with buffalo and black rhino, leopard are now seen regularly in the reserve. Sightings are generally limited to a maximum of 3 vehicles at any given time so as not to unduly stress the animals.
There are many activities available for children including family safari drives, bush orientation, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with plaster of paris, baking in the kitchen, making pizzas in the boma, star gazing, night games, and many more. Children between the ages of zero and five years stay free of charge and children aged six to fifteen pay 50% of the adult rate.
Unfortunately, no game drives are allowed for children under the age of two years and children between the ages of two and five are only allowed on the late morning family safari drive. The family safari drive for children aged two to five departs at 11:00 in winter and 10:00 in summer, and lasts approximately two hours.
Your safari will take place in Madikwe Game Reserve. This malaria-free game reserve is just three hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, and is located along the Botswana border (90 kilometers north of Zeerust). At 75,000 hectares, this reserve is one of the largest in South Africa. The area is well-known for providing the best game viewing within the reserve, as well as having the lowest concentration of safari vehicles which makes for a superior game viewing experience.
Madikwe is a Big Five game reserve. The immense diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of animal species and the distinctive topography presents incredible game viewing opportunities. Madikwe is home to 66 mammal species and approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species.
During your safari, you will be served all meals, teas / coffees, all local beverages (including soft drinks, local brand beers, spirits, and house wines), and game drive refreshments and snacks.
